Sign convention for axial forces

Hello

Could anyone please tell me the sign convention for the axial force in a section. Is compression in the section represented by a positive force (Ax) or the negative force in the loadcase?

In ASBD we use the following sign conventions in design sections and design beams:


      Moment     Axial
 +ve  sagging    compression
 -ve  hogging    tension
