topic Divide element into small elements with linear load in structure definition. in Structural Bridge Design Forum

Hello Everyone, I am trying to model the frame structure with a linear load on the rear of the frame (such as static pressure load of soil or water), as you can see if I want to get a curve on the moment- force diagram, I have to divide the frame into small elements. However, when I divide it into small elements, the linear load cannot be preserved along both sides of the frame (which can be shown in the picture below). Is there any way to fix it? Thank you.

Hi,

Unfortunately it is not easy to define a linear load varying over a series of beam elements in ASBD when it is not in the xy plane. If it was in the xy plane then a longitudinal beam load could be used to achieve this. To apply this load to the member shown in your screen shot you would need to determine the load intensity at each end of the beam elements:

and enter one linear load for each appropriate beam element:

If you created your portal frame using 1m wide finite elements then you could use the finite element "hydrostatic load" option to create this more readily, but I'm fairly sure this is not what you intended to do.

I hope this has been helpful.

Kind regards

Dave Geeves
