I'm analyzing the stresses around a hole in a big steel beam and I have modelled the beam with steel panels. I'm not sure I understand the "map results" parameters tab correctly. I assumed that the "maximum" or "absolute maximum" value would be the maximum of "upper" "middle" or "lower" layer but it doesn't seem so.

In the attached pdf I have marked a point with the principal stress "S1". The "upper" "middle" or "lower" has about the same stress around 350 MPa. But if I choose the maximum value it shows a value of 410 MPa.

Can you explain this to me?

Look at loadcase ULS component 5 just above node 805 for example. It seems to have something to do with the smoothing. If I use "smoothing within a panel" it fits with the maximum of upper middle or lower layer but if I choose "global smoothing" it's a different value.

You should not use the global smothing for panels not being in the same plane.
