This matters only for steel design (not static calculations of a model) as determines the verification path (which code formulas are used to check section capacity). I don't think there is one that would match exactly the shape as you have (in other words the design code doesn't give you information how to design it).

Special steel compound section

Hi,

Is it possible to create (or model) the sort of special section in the attached file in Robot?

It consists of 305x165UB (Top Chord) connected to a 139.7x10CHS (Bottom Chord) connected via a 20mm thick plate. Height of plate is approx. 650mm, to give some perspective. Essentially it forms a sort stringer for a steel pedestrian bridge with intermediate members spanning on to it to support the flooring.

I do not necessarily require to verify the strength of the section itself, but is forms part of a vibration model to analyze the response of the bridge under an applied load.

If it possible to model, what is the best way to go about it and analyzing it for the intended purpose?

Thanks.

Yes, you can create this section in Robot Section Builder module and then use if for static and dynamic analysis in Robot. You may want to watch the recording of the 8th Robot webinar to find out more. It is available from:

Thanks for your reply Artur, it was very helpful.

What "Section Type" should I choose to define the compound section - when saving to my user database - as I am to use it in a model to design?

How much of any effect does this definition have on the design if I am not accurate with my input (as I really cannot be fully accurate due to the nature of the section)?
