After playing around with it a bit I discovered that it's not the grids that affect it but rather if there's something at the top of the column that it can connect with. Floors and beams that interrupt or sit on top of the column make the symbolic lines disappear. I don't know why this has to show up on the level below when the view range and cut plane are well below the floor/beam above.

I modified my concrete column family to show symbolic lines to appear like a masonry column(cmu block with cells). The problem I have just noticed in the first project I tried to use them is that the linework disappears in some cases when near grid lines. I assume this is an default override of linework to keep the gridlines visible. Is there a possible workaround for keeping the symbolic lines visible. Is there a specific type of symbolic line that will not disappear?

When the column is moved to intersect the grid line this happens.

^This is where the columns, all with the exact same height and type, are placed, some along the perimeter of a slab w/ edge and 2 interior columns. I don't see why they are appearing differently. See attached family.

I had issue when you try to edit the columns, change level references and offsets etc. They would show differently on each Level/Plan so when connecting using Attach/Detach this could cause a similar scenario.

If i simply set the correct Level References from the outset it worked fine and showed correctly on the Top and Bottom Levels/Plans but as you mention adding a floor then changed this and i could repeat your issue. Looking into this i'm looking at the process of foreground and Background overriding itself somehow and causing issues for the masking regions?

I would recommend in this instance that you load in Detail Items which represent the Block as Families and align/Lock them inside the column and use the same Visibility Parameters to control them as before and this will be more in-line with what Revit recommends and works better. Also the Detail Item is good to keep for reference.

Thank you for looking into this. Yes, I changed the symbolic linework to detail items and that seemed to solve the issue. I'm still curious as to what the symbolic lines do when a floor/beam connect into the column.

Not sure i will continue to review but would again suggest masking regions
