The reason is with the family. If we put the material behaviour of the beam as concrete and put the visibility of the 3d geometry(sweep) to be visible in coarse, medium and fine then this family will auto join with slab or other concrete beams in project.
Next, if we put the material behaviour other than concrete(steel), and put the visibility of the 3d geometry(sweep) to be visible in coarse, medium and fine then this family can be used with join tool in project. We can select the beam using join tool.

In most of the structural framing family, the solid geometry will be set as invisible in coarse mode.

both beam and slab must be of the same material . For instance Concrete cast in Place - must be the same name for the material. Then , use Join, select the slab and the beam ( only the conrete layer of the floor will join the concrete beam)

Is edge of beam perfectly aligned with edge of floor? From my tests it tends to remain un-joined even after such initial misalignment is corrected, until joined manually.

I had the same problem, my slab was 20cm deep and my beam had the same size. Revit showed me the warning that if I joined them the geometry would be lost inside of the other. So what I did: I increased the beam a liiiiitle bit, in a way that quantifications wouldnt be affected. And that was it. They joined perfectly.

In case you have both beams and slab of the same width, you have to change the heigth of the beams in order to make them bigger then the slab, do the join (as @cristinapaz.arq suggested), but after that you can reset the beams heigth to the original value (not affecting drawings, quantifications etc).

Hope it's a useful trick 🙂
