topic OS Setup Enquiry in Revit Structure Forum

Hi

We have a query from a customer which we tried to answer but they are not really convinced with the answer. So if anyone could help us give them a detailed explanation, it would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the query.

The IT department in the customer's organization has proposed the purchase of new hardware to setup the license server as the current server hardware is quite old and so they feel it's unreliable. Since the new hardware would cost a significant amount of money, their management is insisting that the licenses be setup on a virtual environment on the existing hardware.

They want to know which license environment would be more preferable, a physical machine or a virtual environment and why. Also, they would like to know if it is a good idea to have a Redundant License Server Model on 3 virtual machines.

Based on our experience with license servers, we gave the following answer.

A Physical server is always preferable over a Virtual server. We recommend a Physical server as troubleshooting a physical server would be much easier than troubleshooting a virtual server.

Choosing to setup a redundant server in a virtual environment would only complicate the setup more and make it even harder to troubleshoot in case of issues.

For now, since the existing setup is working properly, we suggest that you retain the redundant license server model. But if and when you're moving to a new server, we suggest that you consider moving to a Single License server model on a physical server because time and time again, this model has proven to be the most effective, reliable and easy to troubleshoot.

But, they mentioned that the answer was vague and wasn't detailed enough to justify choosing one environment over the other. So we need an expert's insight on this matter.

Please consider all the following possibilities and suggest the best choice with reasons to back your suggestions.

A Single License Server Model on a Physical Server

A Redundant License Server Model on a Physical Server

A Single License Server Model on a Virtual Environment

A Redundant License Server Model on a Virtual Environment

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
