topic Re: Elevation View Cuts Through End of Beam But It Doesn't Show as "Cut&amp in Revit Structure Forum

I never received a solution to this. This was done in a previous version of Revit but I have not noticed if the problem was solved in the newer releases. As I mentioned above though, it appeared to have something to do with the behavior of the Structural Framing default parameters. i.e. "if cut is in the last 12" of a beam, show as projection surface." It's a strange default that doesn't usually create an issue except for in very specific instances.

My solution was to add a filled region for this particular view. Let me know if you find some other, better solution.

Elevation View Cuts Through End of Beam But It Doesn't Show as "Cut"

I'm currently working on a project in which a concrete structural framing member extends through a wall. The concrete beam extends past the face of the wall by 1'-0". However, when I add an Elevation View to the side of the wall that the beam cuts through, it shows the beam in the Projection Style (it doesn't actually show the beam as cut). The Elevation View is aligned 1/128" from the face of the wall, meaning that just under 1'-0" of beam end is extending past the cut plane of the elevation view. If I move then end of the beam 1" further past then face of the wall (end of beam is ~1'-1" past the face of the wall shown in the elevation view), the beam then shows as cut. I have a similar condition in which the reverse is true; i.e. the majority of the beam is "behind" the elevation view but less than 1'-0" extends through the cut plane of the view. (I'm hoping this makes sense).

I can cut in the same location with a section and the beam shows correctly as a Cut Pattern and Lineweight.

This seems like a glitch of some sort. Does an Elevation View that cuts through the final 1'-0" of a beam show the beam in the Projection Style instead of the Cut Style? Is there a reason for this? Is there a way to change this? Is this dictated by the Structural Framing Member or the Elevation View Properties?

Any help or insight is appreciated.

That distance doesn't seem to have any bearing on the result. I tried it from as close as practical (1/128" from the face of the wall) to the very end of the beam (1'-0" from the face of the wall) with the result being the same. The beam still shows as a surface instead of a cut. If I move it the other direction (into the wall) by as little, the beam shows correctly cut. Just the last foot of the beam depicts this way apparently when cut by an elevation.

I've attached a plan view and the elevation view here. The red line represents where the cut occurs (at the wall face). There is 1'-0" of the 60"x100" Beam that extends through the wall. In the attached "Elevation of Beam," you can see that the beam is shown in the projection style while the adjacent beam is shown in the cut style. Let me know if this clarifies my issue at all.

I see you’re new to the forum with just a few posts. So welcome aboard!

What version of Revit, and what build exactly, are you using?

Was the model started in this Revit version or in an earlier one and upgraded?

What operating system are you running?

For this elevation view, double-check the Graphic Display Options to make sure you don’t inadvertently have Depth Cueing on (and that all the settings are as intended).

Try making another elevation view. Do you get different results?

Try a section view. How does that look?

Does turning Hardware Acceleration off make a difference?

Does your video card driver need updating?

If none of that helps, can you post the actual .rvt file here?

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm using Revit 2017 Build 17.0.501.0 on Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.
The model was started in 2017 and is a Structural Model.
I'm unsure about the Depth Cueing but it seems to only apply to Architectural and Coordination Views (This is a structural discipline view).
I tried the section in the same area and it showed up correctly. A new elevation at the same or similar location shows the same thing.
I checked updates (Found one and updated it) and unchecked the hardware acceleration but nothing changed.

My guess is that this is a property of beams and elevation views but I wondered if anyone else could confirm that.

This may be a matter of where the elevation clip plane is being located.

Where that plane is placed in relation to that beam will make the difference in appearance:

I've demonstrated this in a short Screencast video with audio: Elevation view clip plane

I didn't yet. Martin was running it up the chain to see if there was something bigger that needed to be done. My gut tells me that this is an inadvertent glitch or perhaps Revit treating Concrete Beams similarly to Steel Beams in some way.

Stay tuned.

Do you have a couple pictures or a Screencast of your issue to post here?

Hi!

I found this topic on autodesk knowledge network link. I think you have the same problem.

How I understand there is the only one solution, you must UNCUT wall and beam geometry. Let me explain how I see this problem. If you have model two walls Revit get autojoining elements, and if they are of the same category you can't see joined lines at all. But if you are joining two different categories than you get these projection lines. I think it must be improved in next releases of Revit.

If helped mark as a solution, and will be glad for kudos!

Rather than starting a new topic to cover this, is there any way I could bring this topic back to life and ask if anyone has found a solution?

I, like the OP, have created some (interior) elevations, and with structural beams as timbers to a sloped ceiling, and when the elevation cut plane is parallel with the ridge and within 1' of the ridge, it will not show the beams as "cut". It even shows the beams behind the cut plane as if they are somehow projecting themselves into the cut plane and being shown in elevation view (not being cut). I can post photos if it would help explain the situation further. Thanks.

Not actually understand, but did you tryed change visbility trough : view preoperties, extents, Far Clipping and try to change options.
