Hello all,

i have a revit file of 30mb at the most. When i make an export to IFC (only a part of it) it will become unmanageable. The size will be over 200mb. When i open the IFC file with notepad i see a lot of IFCIFCCARTESIANPOINT, IFCFACE and IFCPOLYLOOP. Way to much. Anyone an idea that might help? Every time i try to export the whole file to IFC it get stuck. There are a lot of trusses and structural framing in it. In total about 6600 elements. And when i export that small part (like 2000 elements) the file get more then 200mb...

Which IFC exporter do you use? Do you use the standard IFC function for Revit or do you use the Alternate IFC exporter?

The results will differ when you use another setup, like IFC 2x4 or something.

The File size is not somuch important as is the result you get when importing the file.

When you miss out on objects this is much more annoying than a file that is 20MB bigger fir instance.

You should take a good look at the IFC export settings and determine which objects should be or should not be exported and how the should be exported.

You might also check for an IFC course which you could attend. 😉

the problem was in the chords of trusses, something went wrong and the IFC file was full of loops and cartersianspoints because of this. So i fixed it with another family.

The file size is not the matter here. Every time i runned an IFC export, Revit jammed. And when the IFC is bigger than the Revit file, then something is wrong, you should know that if you want to give a course 😉 Of course you can work this way, but i want to have the best IFC export possible, not full with loops and unnecessary big file.

but thanks for your response!

Good to see you fixed the problem by using another family.

Can you please close this thread by accepting your own answer as the solution?

B.t.w. i'm not the one giving the course.

hi Yoyomule,

as far as i know IFC4 is not supported by available IFC viewers.

I wrote a blog about finding out what the problem is. I hope this will help you, when you've found it, try to model it different, or don't export it to IFC.

https://merlijnvanleeuwen.wordpress.com/2017/03/05/how-to-find-issues-on-importing-or-exporting-ifc/

Good luck!
