Another option is to model a second floor object to represent the grating. This floor object can be “joined” to the walls. If you don’t want to see this floor, you can place this floor on a new workset and hide it in all views by default. Then model the actual grating you want to see. This is handy when the cut is larger than the actual grating, as you can create what ever size cut you want with the floor object that gets hidden. The void family solution can be a pain sometimes if there are many cuts to be made.

Go to model-I place, select generic, name it as Void, go to void extrusion, align to your object you to cut then go to cut geometry, select your object and void and it will cut as expected. Thanks

I am not getting anything about "joined" to walls. This is what comes up. Beginning to think something wrong with my computer.

You need to use the join command. Cancel out of the default dialog box that always pops up asking you to join the floors. I used it one and vowed to never use it again. The join tool also gives you control on what order you join things.
