""Quantity by rebar set" issue

Hi,

I have one set of variable rebars, 33 nos. In schedule, I should get 33 nos for "quantity" and also 33 nos for "quantity by rebar set", right? What I do get is 1 nos in quantity and 33 nos for "quantity by rebar set". When I check "itemize every instance", I get the same 1 nos for "quantity" and for "quantity by rebar set" it shows 1089, like I have 33 sets with 33 rebars in each set. What am I missing/doing wrong here??

Edit: I did choose calculate totals, I need to calculate the total number of bars in a host.

A rebar set is a single Revit element.

erik, wow!!! how does that help me??? ok, a rebar set is the one element (the "quantity by rebar set" is a misleading name for me), it shows 1089 because it calculates totals (and makes no sense to calculate totals for that field, I know) (this would have been a much better and helpful response).

why does it show quantity of 1 instead of 33 then??

FDC, I tried both options, I still get a quantity of 1 for a variable rebar set, if there is no calculate totals. calculate totals solves my issue but why it is behaving like that? which one is the field to show me the total number of rebars in a set (variable or not) and which one shows the total number of rebars in all sets (quantity of 1 set multiplied by the number of sets)?

Ok, for quantity field you chose to calculate totals, right? that's why you have the number of all rebars in that field. what if you don't want to calculate totals? shouldn't it show the number of rebars in the variable set the same like it shows the number of rebars in a straight set?

No!

Because all the rebars have different lengths.

This means that they are all different rebars!

If you want to show them all you have to change your reinforcement settings to "number bars individually".

A variable rebar set is only 1 number (with maybe 1000 different rebars in it).

The calculated totals are 1000 DIFFERENT rebars for 1 varying rebar set.

Or itemize, of course.

Then you see each bar with its unique length.

Because of this unique length Revit cannot give you the quantity unless you calculate totals.

so this is my schedule with "variable rebars as a whole", it shows quantity 1, meaning it counts the number of rebar set. for the straight rebars, the same field counts the number of rebars. how come? I do want to number the variable sets as a whole, but I also want to show the number of rebars in that set. I understand how to get this now (chose calculate totals for that field or consider a different field, "quantity by rebar set"), I don't understand why Revit considers two separate elements (rebars vs rebar sets) for the same field and how does it help me to show on one line in the schedule the number of rebars but on another line the number of rebar sets...

anyway, a sample project attached, it seems that this is normal Revit functioning...

How come? I don't know but there will be a reason for it I may have forgotten.

You want to number the variable set as a whole but isn't your rebar number the whole set?

Anyway, not so long ago it wasn't even possible to use varying rebar sets (I had to do it manually!).

Revit isn't perfect but it is getting better wih every new release.

another thing: if I chose to number variable rebars individually, this is how the schedule would look like (I modified the spacing to get fewer rebars):

what I understand from that schedule is that for each of the marks from 3 to 13 I require 11 pieces (there is no calculation there, but the numbers will look the same with calculate totals).

I just want to understand how it works and what am I considering wrong here. I cannot double guess the data Revit gives me, I need to know how to ask for the right data...

Because you chose to number them individually, meaning you have 11 different bars.

11 different bars are 11 different numbers.

You cannot "quantify" different numbers (they are physically different).

It is still a set though and therefore "quantity by rebar set" remains 11.

This indeed is not a good solution but logical (it is still a rebar set).

In this case you should hide the "quantity by rebar set" column but you will have a huge amount of rebar numbers.

Your first schedule was a better option (just remove the quantity column there in my opinion).

I know and I understand perfectly!

Sometimes there are way to much options to get there but every option has its reason (I have to admit that I also have my doubts sometimes and other times I forget what it is good for).

Sorry, I was trying to answer from my iPhone, which was not a good idea as it posted before I was done typing. I'll also apologize because I read your question incorrectly and would have answered the completely wrong question, if I had been able to type it in. Either way...

FDC, how do you handle tags and MRAs for variable rebar sets if you have to specify the number of rebars?? It seems that I have to use "quantity by rebar set" in labels to get the right quantity, as the "quantity" field is giving only 1...
