For me, the goal was to join beam with insulation wall so that in the section I can see insulation around the beam and not just two elements on top of each other with overlapping hatch. I don't know why, but changing the material didn't do anything for me, only when I replaced the original content of basic structural framing family with the new extrusion it worked. You are talking about a sweep, but I just checked, that when you create new structural framing family from scratch, there is no sweep in it, there is an extrusion! You just have to replace existing extrusion in a family with a new one.

Hello! I'm pretty sure, that somebody knows the answer 😉

I'm not even able to click on beam after select "JoinGeomtry". Is element unjoinable? I have to join beam with floor. Beam is made from concret, floor - precast. Of course, functions Cope and Cut don't work too. Maybe, is some family parameter unchecked?

I would be very greatful for any help.

No, they are different. But the problem is that I can't even select beam after click on "joinGeometry tool". And of course can't join to the others, as it would be unjoinable.

If they have different material even if you join them the boundaries of the beam won't disappear. I suggest using the concrete beam that is in the library, it will nott have join problems.

I'm having the same problem as the OP here, what am I missing? Why does the join tool IGNORE beams? The issue is not differing materials, it's that when you mouse over the joist (even if it the first object your trying to pick) Revit doesn't even highlight it for selection.

Thanks for the reply, unfortunately that's not the issue at hand. The issue is with JoinGeometry (not Beam/Column Joins) In the first picture below I have a concrete joist inside a floor/ceiling assembly that I am able to join so the line weights change appropriately and the materials show correctly. The green arrow in this image points to a joined concrete joist and the red arrow points to an un-joined joist. In the second picture, I have a joist in a floor assembly that I can't even select with the JoinGeometry tool. The floor will highlight blue but the beam won't highlight at all. Revit is COMPLETELY ignoring the object inside the tool. Outside of the JoinGeometry tool I am able to select the wood joist without issue.

Both were placed using the Beam System tool. Both are OOB Revit joists, however the concrete joist has been modified to add a custom profile. Removing the beam system and leaving the joist in place has no effect.

I managed to solve it as @dferreira-blackwell mentioned. I was having an issue joining a timber beam family with a floor, but after I changed the family of the rectangular timber beam for the concrete one, the problem was solved, after that, I just changed the concrete structural material back to timber.

I was trying to do the same thing, meaning joining beam to other revit elements, such as floor and wall but it wasn't working. The basic Structural Framing family doesn't join with any model elements. For me, solution was to open Structural Framing family which was already placed inside my model and create Extrusion in the exact same place where the original shape of framing was. I hosted the Extrusion to the same Reference planes, so I had the Extrusion on top of the original shape in my family. After that, I deleted the original framing from my family, leaving only the Extrusion. I loaded family into the project, overwriting the existing version and its parameter values. Once it was loaded, I was able to join my Structural Framing family to anything I wanted.

Interesting, does changing it from a sweep to an extrusion break the coping tool or does that still work? I did check, and the concrete beam is a sweep as well, so it still doesn't explain why the two behave differently in my instance, they are both structural framing families.

Changing the material does not make the family selectable while in the join command. It is still ignored. Also, I am trying to join dissimilar materials. I want the line weights to reduce, and the hatch pattern to show correctly. If I join the same materials, the beam will disappear. If that was the goal, I'd just hide it.

You just pointed out something I hadn't noticed yet, OOB structural framing members (beams) are sweeps, OOB columns are extrusions. There are architectural columns which will join with walls, the structural columns do not. Unfortunately, the architectural column library is nonexistent, and every shape has to be created. There are no architectural framing members (beams).

Are you sure we're talking about the same families? When you create new family and select Metric Structural Framing - Beams and Braces template, there is a basic extrusion inside this family.

I am using imperial libraries, but yes when I select the shape in a column it's an extrusion, and the beam is a sweep. I checked the dimension lumber, steel and concrete beams I'm currently using. ...I do not have the OOB metric libraries installed to see if they were built differently. I certainly wouldn't put it past Autodesk to do something like that. Do you know if you're using OOB libraries, or if your firm has built custom libraries?

Extrusion or Sweep does not matter.
