Hi all,

Does anyone know if you're able to tag Revit members by a beam reference instead of their full member size?

For example if i want to tag a 305x164x40 UB by it's reference: 'B10' instead, is there any way to do this?

Obviously you can just use a bit of text with the reference but this means you'll have to update that if that member size were to change, so what i'm after is the beam reference tag that will update if you edit the member size just like a normal tag would.

Cheers,

You mean to tag a beam by its number rather than its reference, don't you? This is possible. You should edit tag family and add e.g. a label with a Mark parameter which is user definable and also the label with beam Family Type parameter which will represent beam section geometry. If that is what you were looking for let me know and I will provide screencast or detailed instruction.

Hi @Anonymous,

Ok perhaps my terminology is wrong but yeah if i'm able to tag my beam by B10 instead of the standard 305x165x40 UB then that'd be great if you could expand on that with greater detail.

Cheers,

I'd say you want to tag your beams with Type Mark, not Mark:

(obviously you want to save it as different family or add a family type with visibility settings)

I did similar to this, I used "Description" instead.

You need to apply this to EACH Beam and Column.

This needs applied to all other BEAM and COLUMN libraries for each user and version.

Otherwise if someone else loads a beam/column from a non-edited table the labels will all become "?"

Notice: Beams and Columns use different labels too you need to edit both.

When you create the label you can add "(E)" or "(N)" as a prefix and "(DEMO)" as a suffix.

Save as from the editor was the easiest way I found.

Then create a family type for the Existing, New and Demo.

Then FLIP the labels as needed once placed from the property menu.

Haven't figured out how to get the entity's property Phase to control them yet.
