Steel connection help - Raking beam.

Hi all,

Wonder if someone can assist me with a steel connection problem.

I have a project I've drawn in CAD but thought I'd have a go at modelling the roof structure so the client can visualise it more easily.

CAD plan looks like this:

It's a pitched roof extension, the B4 beam running north to south is a ridge beam and the 2 angled B6 beams are raking down to eaves level to pick up the dormer ridges on each side. I've modelled the steel work but I'm having difficulty with the connection between the raking beams and the ridge:

I've roughed up how I think the connection should be:

Is anyone able to give me some guidance on if there's an in-built connection that will do that or will I have to do something custom? I've tried a few but none seem to be selectable once I've made the connection between the 2 beams.

Hi @AJBuckers

You want to try the "Platform plate" connection, this will give you the plate welded to the toes of B4 and the stiffeners and then the end plate welded to B6

Hi Rob, thanks for taking the time to help me out again.

Connection looks exactly like the solution I need, however, I've loaded it into the project but it's not available as an option once I've made the connection?

Hmm it might not like the angles of the input beams, with no beams selected click the connection button, then choose the connection then select the 2 memebers, if it doesnt like it you should get a warning message

If its still not working could you upload the model or part of the model for testing?

I thought I'd try modelling 2 new beams on a flat plane to test that connection and still couldn't apply that type?

-In 3D your detail level must be set to fine

-remove de existing connection and do the connection again (Platform Plate).

And here is at the actual beams. You just need to play with the connection parameters to get it right.

Hi @EdwinG thanks for your reply, I've tried what you suggested and I was still unable to select the platform plate connection type. 🤔 Beginning to think it might be my revit install?

Try this

-draw 2 new beams and add a connection to these 2 beams. This was the first thing i tried in your drawing.

I've also tried that already and unfortunately it didn't work either.

Steps were a bit too long to type out so ive made a video showing how I achieved what you want - https://autode.sk/3IlAw9O

The connection doesnt work properly first time becuase of the angle of the valley beam, so you need to make it shallower, then set it up and explode the connection
