How to Create or Duplicate Multi Rebar Tags for Use at Multiple Scales and Locations in Revit?

Hello Revit Community,

I am facing an issue with multi rebar tags in Revit. I want to use the same multi rebar tag at different scales and locations, such as in plans and sections. My goal is to either create a new multi rebar tag or duplicate the existing one for use in multiple places.

However, when I duplicate the tag, the name and settings of the tag change, but when I check in the project, it still behaves as the original tag and shows up the same at all places, regardless of duplication.

Additionally, I could not find a template for creating a new multi rebar family. I would appreciate it if anyone could guide me on how to properly duplicate a multi rebar tag for use at different locations and scales, or if there is a way to create a completely new multi rebar family for my needs.

Revit treats Text as True size relative to print size/Height. This means, when you change the scale of the view, everything will be scaled UP or Down except the TEXT. It will maintain its True Print Size. (ie: When you scale down a view to 1:1000 the 1m would print as 1mm on sheet while the Text that has a Height of 3mm will maintain its Height. Reason behind this is the Reading and Legibility convention standards)

Hence , a single tag that works for all scales is not possible when annotative text/labels are used. Solution is generating multiple types within the tag family where each Type corresponds to a scale. See Steps and Youtube video below:

Edit Family
Duplicate the Label
Associate each label with a type Y/N Visibility parameter
GO to Family Types and duplicate the current type
Check/uncheck the relevant Visibility parameter for each type
Save and reload
Use the proper type for the proper scale

NOTE: Text print out size/height should remain readable on sheets. That said, when the scale goes beyond 1:500 it is recommended not to reduce the text size less than 1.8mm otherwise it would make it harder for certain individuals to read important info which you might want them not to miss on the Sheets. (Standard Convention is a min. 2.3mm)

If you do wish to start from scratch, you should find the rebar shapes tag template under the content library folder (Family Templates) example: for Revit 2025 it would be C:\ProgramData\Autodesk\RVT 2025\Family Templates\ then under the subfolder of the relevant Country/Language folder

Tags will automatically change size based on the Scale of the View.

So if you wanted Tags at different SIZES in a View with the SAME SCALE you would need to manually edit the Text Height in the Tag directly.

Therefore the simplest option is to place a Multi-Rebar Tag > Properties > Edit Type and identify the Tag Family and Dimension Style driving the formatting.

You can then Select the Tag > Contextual Tab > Modify|Multi-Rebar Annotations > Select Tag

Contextual Tab > Modify|Structural-Rebar Tags > Edit Family

In the Family > File > Save As

Make any necessary changes such as duplicating the Label or Text Properties

Load back into the Project and then Duplicate the Existing Multi-Rebar Tag and select the alternative Tag/Dimensions

There is a difference between a layout rebar tag and a section rebar tag. These tags cannot be substituted for one another (in other words, they cannot be duplicated or copied from a layout to a section).

You will need to set up each tag individually and use the layout tag to tag your rebar in the layout. The same applies to the section tag.
