reference planes - maybe, but not dimensions or constraints, definitely not connectors - again, usually when I try to decompose what someone else did, I either wind up doing it over myself, or really screw the part up. I use a family like that to get ideas on how to make my own, then run with the best parts.

Hi,

I am using a manufacturer library part. It is a floor based item.

Revit is telling me to "click on a floor". So I am, it won't drop in. The circle slash icon is displayed, which tells me there is no host.

Floors are turned on in VG... I can see the little dots.

Floors do not exist in the model directly - they are in the linked RVT from the architect.

When I open the linked file directly I can use the same family/part and drop it on the floor.

I have many wall hosted components all living happily in the (linked in) walls.

suggestions?

Hi, Usually when a host element is in a Linked Model, only Face based families can be placed on them.

right, that explains it!

thanks very much for your answer!

So all this third party content is useless as is, if it isn't face based! Wow!

What is the best way to convert the family file from floor hosted to face based? In the family editor, family category and parameters the floor hosting is grayed out.... Maybe there is some third party tool that can rip through a library and batch convert?

after a bit more research I found this video. It explains a process using the copy/monitor function. It seems a bit clumsy but at least there is a way.

If anyone has any comments please write back!

Workflow for converting family to face based

I just get the size I want set as the current type, copy and paste the geometry only and place it at the current level in a non-hosted family. Otherwise, you're making your own version from scratch, it's faster that way than trying to reverse engineer somebody else's work. We have a bunch of predefined family files (RFA, not RFT) that already have the right parameters loaded, so that saves some time when converting parts.

okay, good. I was thinking about that method (copy geometry only), it seems like a good way because then end result is a known quantity. I think the only things I want to salvage from mechanical familes is the geometry and types.

I'd like to copy the geometry for all types in the family if possible, so I think this means not only copying the basic geometry but also all reference planes and dimensional parameters?

thanks for your advice. It is obviously a pretty big job creating content and I don't want to do it twice!

Just to close this off, I mashed up a manufacturer file with my own parameters and have a great library of baseboards, face based part. Thanks for the guidance.
