Tag pulling wrong shared parameter

Created a tag that pulls from shared parameter. When I try to apply it, a completely different tag is placed.

To visualize the problem, I created a "Phase Tag" which pulls form the shared family input to note if an element is New or Existing. When I bring in the phase tag family and apply it to something like a light, a tag for the Lighting Fixture Circuit appears.

The phase tag family is also not appearing in the "Tag All" function even after bringing it into Manage>Project parameters.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

How did you make the Phase Tag? What Annotation Template did you use?

can you upload the tag family for us to look at.

I used the "Generic Model Tags" Template

It's simply a label that pulls from a created "Phase Tag" shared parameter.

a Generic Model Tag will only tag a Generic Model Family. If you're tagging a Light Fixture, you need to use the Light Fixture Tag family template.

edit the family and try changing the Category and reloading it....

Is there a way to make this tag apply to multiple categories? So the same tag works for both receptacles and lights and data outlets and all that?

Just want to avoid having the same Tag family for each category.

Perhaps create a multi-category tag family so that you can use it across different categories.

You can't add a shared parameter to a Multi-Category tag, you can only select from the list of common parameters.

Just looked a one of my multicategory tags.

In the window on the right select the sheet and star icon bottom left.

Select.

Browse to the required parameter in the shared parameter file.

Ok.

Move the new added parameter from left pane to right

Ok.

"select the sheet" - how do you mean?

When I try to add a shared parameter to a multi-category tag family the option is greyed out as I showed in the screenshot.

Yes - bit embarrassing!!

So @pivanovWGJ7E you can add a shared parameter to your multi-category tag and reload it into your project.

Then you have to add the SAME shared parameter either:-

to the family, then reload the family into your project or
load the shared parameter into the project and associate it with the appropriate family categories

It has to be the SAME shared parameter from the shared parameter file, not just a parameter with the same name.

Yup, seems to have worked when making a new "Multi Category Tag" family. Only problem I have now is the "Tag All" feature doesn't have the option to select it on certain things like lights. If I drag in the family and click on a light it works exactly as intended, but doesn't wanna play nice with "Tag All" function anymore.

Multi-category tags don't allow use of the Tag All option.

If you only want to tag light fixtures why don't you just make the tag a Light Fixture Tag?

You can then duplicate the family and change its category if you then want to use it with another category.

I'm trying to avoid a bloated library of identical families.

But the main reason is because I somehow managed to create that exact family a few months ago (while I was still learning the software and just blindly following tutorials). It was able to tag any category and the "Tag All" feature was amazing.

Went on a 2 month long Revit hiatus, new project, and suddenly it doesn't work like it used to and I spent countless embarrassing hours trying to find out how that happened.

Because of that, I know it can be done and I'm running out of hair to pull out by trying to find out why that amazing little tag family no longer works like before.

Edit: Worth pointing out the way it worked was I added a shared parameter to all the families I want it to tag. All families (lights, recepts. etc) gained a "Phase Type" parameter and the tag always pulled from that.

Not sure how you did that - Tag All isn't an option with multi-category tags as far as I know.

To use Tag All you have to assign a tag to each family category and it has to be a tag of the matching category, it can't be (as far as I know) a MC tag.

Happy to be proved wrong though if someone else has more information on this.

Sorry, got sucked into project deadline. looks like you were well taken care of though 🙂

I love the Tag All tool. I use it all the time and make sure I spend a min on it during my training classes.

I have a love/hate relationship with Multicategory tags. Don't get me wrong, they have their place and can be useful. I just don't find myself using them very often 😊. I could be wrong... but they really only work for Shared Parameters and a small handful of Category Parameters (mostly Identity Data). I don't believe you can use a Multicategory tag to display, for example, the circuit number of circuited families of different categories.
