Since someone has resurrected this old post which more than 2000 people have viewed, the direction of flow of a pipe connect is determined by its flow <STRIKE>configuration</STRIKE> direction which is IN or OUT or Bidirectional.

“In” means flow goes in to the family from the pipe. Out means out of the family to the pipe.

Using directional connectors at terminal or source equipment is what determines the flow direction for the system/network.

Bidirectional is used for inline components which pass the flow through but don’t influence the direction.

The arrow on the connector does not indicate flow direction, it indicates only which side of the connector the pipe connects to.

”Getting into The Flow” explains it all clearly.

Hi everyone,

1st) How do I show my flow direction on Revit? Because I can't seem to check nor change it and it is driving me nuts!

2nd) When I open the family editor and check the original settings of any original Revit MEP family, the arrow that indicates where the hydraulic connector is, is pointing OUT of the equipment - shouldn't it be pointing IN?

3rd) I tried changing the arrow direction and then when I tried dragging the pipe and connecting it to the fixture I got the message that it would not be possible...

Seriously, does anyone know how to fix these things?

1). You can use tags to see if it's working properly - for this you need to have the connectors set correct in your family. If you have issues you can attach your sample here and I'll have a look (revit 2015).

2). The arrow of the connector indicate the direction where the pipe will be drawn.

3). What I already said at point 2.. changing the arrow direction = changing the pipe direction that will be drawn (should always point out of the equipment).

Ok, I figured out that changing the arrow direction in the family editor of each connector doesn't work (must point OUT).

However, I still haven't figured out how to show the FLOW DIRECTION, seriously, I click on the pipe and it doesn't show up like in the videos I've been watching. i'm using Revit 2017 btw.

to view the flow direction of a system:

1-select that system from the system browser or the design space

2-on "modify" tab click "system inspector", if you dont find this button, it means that your system is not well connected

3-click on the new button "inspect"

4-the arrows should appear and show the flow.
