Reconcile Hosting slows model

Anyone else have issues in large models with Reconcile Hosting report slowing the model down considerably?

I'm working on a computer with 32GB RAM, 192 GB free space on my SSD (Saumsung 850 Pro) and all other specs are above/beyond minimum/recommended spec, so I'm not sure what's causing the slow down.

When Reconcile Hosting is closed, the model and all links are very fast.

Hi @Anonymous,

Are you referring to having the palette open? Are you running into a lot of orphaned elements needing to be re-hosted? Do you have a lot of links in the model?

Yes, it slows down when the reconcile hosting palette is open. There are a lot of elements and there is an architectural and structural link.

Our model is large, by our standards (about 230MB), but operates and functions rather smoothly. It's not clear to me why this particular process creates such a significant slow down.

Are you able to upload a journal file from when the issue occurs?

Revit Journal files

Please collect and attach journal files from the affected computer(s) using the following procedure. This process will ensure that only the relevant information is recorded in the journal.

Close Revit completely (so that a new session can be started).
Reopen Revit.
Reproduce the issue.
Without closing Revit, collect the latest (highest-numbered) journal file.

No problem. I don't see anything concerning in your journal; you are up to date with service packs and the hardware looks fine. I've never seen anything similar to this, it's very strange. Other than the links slowing things down (but you say the model is ok without the dialog open) I'm not sure what the issue could be. Just curious, is there a reason you need to keep the palette open while working? My understanding of the workflow is to check the orphaned elements, rehost (or whatever you need to do with them) and then close the dialog.

We are not leaving the palette open during normal work flow. This is occurring while we're trying to resolve orphaned elements. We open the palette only to identify & zoom where the orphaned elements are and rehost, but the process is painfully slow and there are hundreds of issues to resolve.

Also, it is not any faster to use the "Show" feature or to open, visually locate orphaned elements, close palette, resolve, then reopen the palette, repeat.

Revit does have to do a lot of computational tasks in order to find these elements which could certainly slow down the model. Do you know why there are so many issues to resolve? Is this every time you open the model, or receive an update to the link, and are you reloading the link (not deleting and replacing)? There shouldn't be that many unhosted elements unless someone is deleting walls, etc.

Yes, the issues have arisen due to a recent update. A little background, the architectural link had several changes. It's a large 5 level building (including attic and roof level. The 3rd Level, Attic, and Roof all increased in height. In addition, there were several room changes so walls and ceilings were deleted and redrawn to the new desired configuration.

Again, I've just never seen such a slow from trying to reconcile hosting so I've been wondering if there's a bigger problem or something I'm not aware of creating these issues.

What's also been a problem is the increase in building height. Several plumbing systems lost fittings and elbows due to the level height changes.

If the fittings are not moving with the level change, this is a known issue that is fixed in 2017. A workaround for this is to create a new level and rehost your pipes and accessories to this new level (renaming as needed) instead of moving the existing level

I just ran into this very issue. Large model that runs fine until the Reconcile Hosting pallet is open and then it is painfully slow.

Did you ever find the cause? Did it get better when the number of orphaned elements went down?

I'd like to chime in here and confirm that this is indeed a problem. If the Reconcile Hosting palette is open, model is super slow; regardless of how many items are in the reconcile list. I'd love to see this performance improved.

Since this is a performance issue, it is more than likely something to do with the model and/or the computer rather than a programmatic problem.

What have you tried to do to find the cause?

You should probably try some trouble shooting. It's not going to fix itself. You can probably fix it as it is most likely something on your end.

Is it likely a performance issue on my end if every user in our office has the problem on every Revit machine with every model we're working on with every Revit version (though we don't have any Revit 2019 projects going yet)?

I would have posted any findings after your first post. It was an intermittent issue so the exact cause was hard to find and we were doing a lot of refining of our workflow at the time. That particular project was extremely painful with hundreds of objects getting unhosted with regular updates. I've since changed workplaces and haven't had to do any reconciling in a while but it was not a problem in other projects.

Again, I would suggest that you start with AutoDesk's suggestions for improving performance to see if anything there helps. Then maybe look at your workflow and/or the workflow of your consultants to minimize unhosting, like move walls instead of delete and replace in the same place.

To briefly chime in, I was experiencing the same issue on a current project. Removing all graphics overrides that occur with the Reconcile Hosting window (ours was defaulted to show unhosted elements as a dark green) seemed to fix the issue.
