I have inserted a background which shows some concrete tanks. I can see a plan view of the tanks when in a "ground level" plan view, but when I switch to the top tank level, the walls are not visible.

I have tried this in the background file, and the walls are visible (although they are slightly faded).

What do you mean with background? What kind of file, Revit, autocad, image?

If it is a linked Revit file you might need to edit the view range so that the lower level is visible

There are many visibility settings in Revit. All these settings control what you will see in a view. It is very well possible that in the linked files the settings are completely different. Like I mentioned it can be view range settings, underlay settings, discipline settings, graphics overrides, filters, blocking objects.

Have a look at some of these settings otherwise consider to post some pictures or even better upload the files so we can see what you have so far.

Ok, when I used the negative value (-1) it worked.

But I would like to know why it needs a negative value. Does that mean that, if your view is on Level 1, it will not show items on level 1? In other words, it will not show the items unless you are "cutting through them" - like a section?

Have in mind that if you are working on MEP having this parameter set to the level below then you won't be able to see any walls but the exterior ones. Hope this helps someone at some point.
