topic precise family placement in Revit MEP Forum

Hi, i am trying to automate family placement of data devices into communication cabinets (42U).

typcial scenario - I need to insert a network switch into a Rack at height "36", and if this height is already occupied, i need it to give me an error.

I have created my rack family with reference planes for each rack "U" number and labeled them on the correct work plane, so i can move the data device familes to that position manually.

I have also added a Rack Location Number parameter to each data device family.

But i cant seem to match the 2 together and automate it.

can anyone give me some feedback on this? I think there would be a way in Dynamo, but i have have absolutely no experience on this .. yet.

Thanks

Can you assign your family a default height that matches the height you at which you need it placed? You should get a warning if there is another element in its way.

Interesting topic. For example, a 2U patch panel @ RU13 should automatically return error if you were trying to take up RU14. Does this mean you'll have a two-step operation per rack within your Dynamo graph, 1) to designate RU#, then 2) confirm on the equipment height?
