Rename shared parameter

Hello,

Can shared parameter be renamed?

I am trying to connect 'light fitting tag' and 'Space tag' because light fitting tag is referring to some of space parameters such as floor and space number. I have created shared parameter because those two tags are under different families. So I have created a new space tag with shared room number parameter, however when I load it onto a project, I can not re-name it. I have set up a type parameter so I can manually type in from 'edit type' but it does not work either.

Any advise will be much appreciated.

Hello,

Shared parameters can´t be renamed, proper parameter naming strategy is very important.

What you are trying to achieve is not possible without Dynamo or an API.

There are ways to rename your Shared Parameter, but it is NOT recommended, as shown in the image, it is the first command told to the user in the Shared Parameter file.

Shared parameters renaming in prohibited in Autodesk® Revit®,

I've found a solution and created a plugin that does the job and can rename multiple shared parameters in your whole family library at once.

Please note his plugin renames shared parameters in the family itself before loading it into your project

hi Maged Ahmad, does it have trial period? to my understanding, in order to rename existing SPs in RVT, you have to first DELETE project parameters which are SPs, then upload all RFAs w/ renamed SPs, is it correct?

Never ever edit that file, with or without a plugin. Unintended consequences....

I once tried to skip the manual way to get a shared parameter from a family or a different project in my shared parameter file. Even when the txt file looked exactly what it should have looked, it didn't work to use that parameter. I then did the long (official) way by means of exporting from the family and swapping shared parameter files, and it worked and the txt file looked exactly the same. while nothing bad happened during that few seconds, there is a good chance if you force the issue it will do something bad you will learn about after you sunk a month of work in your project. My guess there is just more meta-data in the txt file than you "see".

Even if that plugin for some reason works, what happens when you upgrade to the next version of Revit? Then you may learn how bad of an idea it was to do something Adesk directly told you to not do.....

Hi Ning,

This works on shared parameters in families RFA files not project files. Used in wide implementation of Shared parameters through Company families libraries. When you use the processed families in your new projects these will go with the renamed shared parameters. This plugin does the rename job, keeps the same GUID, and keeps the formulas and shared parameters values in your families as well. It one of our most successful plugins indeed because this is nearly impossible the normal way through Revit ® program GUI.

However, if you load a family processed with this plugin in an old project that had the same family before with the old shared parameter name you have to delete the old shared parameter form your project first.
This is something with Auodesk® Software that keeps traces of old shared parameters loaded before in families even if you deleted the whole family that got it in in the first place.

We do provide a dynamo script that deals with this in programmatic way to delete the old shared parameters root from your project file and will be added as a new feature in the shared parameters renamer plugin through our development queue.

The new versions will have a trial version too, so keep tuned.

i'm cleaning up project template (rvt), is it safe to delete all shared parameters without binding (i mean not binding to project parameters)?

The proper way to clear the Template is through the Manage menu on the Clear Unused tab.
