While the above solution sounds good, I'm curious about the issue.

Are you saying that there is nothing on the screen when you open any view?

We have a project with a linked architectural model that contains the building.

Every view I open is zoomed into an area outside the building/model area. I can pan and zoom until our model is centered in the view. But if I save it, and close the view, and reopen the same view, once again its centered outside the model.

What the heck causes this, and how do I fix it? I'm getting tired of having the find our building on every single view I open.

Thanks for the advice, but the views are already cropped.

Rob;

Yes, every view I open has the extents zoomed to an area outside the linked model. I can double click the center mouse wheel to zoom the the extents of the cropped viewport, but as soon as I close the view and then reopen it, back to empty space.

This is a frequent problem I see on a lot of projects. This project is large enough its going to become a real pain in the ***. I'm thinking the architects moved their model, or maybe the base point or something? Or maybe it wasn't linked in correctly??

Still, a view that is cropped should open zoomed into that cropped area. But that doesn't happen.

A little more info: Some of these views have dependent views . For example, I have a lighting plan, but its too big to fit on a sheet, so there is a dependent view for Area A and another one for Area B. Same thing for the power plan.

Some of the views open showing part of the view, some open centered on the view, and some open with nothing in the view. It just seems very random. And there doesn't seem to be any way to set the default area that a view opens to show.

Autocad remembers exactly how a view is zoomed and panned when its closed. It doesn't seem like Revit does anything similar.

@stever66 wrote:

Yes, every view I open has the extents zoomed to an area outside the linked model. I can double click the center mouse wheel to zoom the the extents of the cropped viewport, but as soon as I close the view and then reopen it, back to empty space.

This is a frequent problem I see on a lot of projects.

Obviously, this is not normal. Since it happens on a lot of projects, I'm thinking the source of the problem is the template or in the way the project is set-up. Strange behavior like this could also be caused by being very far away from the origin or corrupted views.

Try recreating the views to rule out corruption at that level. That's quick and easy to do.

The solution may be in prevention. Start a new project and go through each step closing and opening views for testing for when the issue to starts.

HTH

Wait. I might have sent you down the wrong rabbit hole.

Does this happen when you first open the project?

When you have a plan open and you open another plan, Revit opens the next plan view at the same location as the one that is open.

FYI, please don't bring up AutoCAD as a comparison. It only muddies the waters.
