In Manage>Phases, its the before/after settings which affect chronological order of the phases. You can have phases called existing, 1, 2, 3, new, future, whatever but those names are not the order of the phases, you need to look at the order in the Phases settings.

For objects its the Phase Created parameter which determines when the object arrived in the project, not when you actually added it.

In the view its the view’s own Phase setting which determines what the view considers to be New (current) or Previous (existed earlier in the project).

It is the view’s Phase Graphics which determine the phases seen in the view.

In phase graphic filters you’ll note that phase names are not used - references are to Previous, New, Demo, Temporary.

Previous means any phase prior to the view’s own phase, regardless of what those previous phases are called.
New does not mean a phase named “new”, it means anything created in the same phase as the view’s phase setting.

If you create an object and set its Phase Created correctly then it will observe phasing and phase filters regardless of when in the project timeline you physically added it to the project.

It will appear as New in the phase in which its Phase Created parameter refers and it will appear in all future phases if the Previous option is included in the those view’s phase filters (unless its been demolished).

I’m not sure if this is very clear but rest assured that the actual day or time which you added objects or views has nothing to do with how Revit displays them - its object, view and phase filter settings which matter.

PS: you can also set the view’s phase graphics filter to None to test if its the phasing which is affecting object visibility.

Hi everyone,

I have a very strange thing happening. I have two views with the same template, EVERYTHING is checked in the template (did this as a test, wasn't originally intended that way). One view has this piece of equipment, the other doesn't show it at all. It wasn't manually hidden. This project does have additional phases. Chronologically, the view that does not show the objects, was definitely made after the phases were set up, and the one that does show them was possibly made before or after the phases were set up. Was done in quick succession so we aren't sure which really came first. The phase filters are set up identically now, but I don't know if that order causes them to look the same but behave differently.

We already just did a work around, but would really like to figure out the issue so we don't run into this again.

Without the model, it's a guessing game. Can you post the portion of the model exhibiting this? It might be quicker for someone to take a look to see what is different.

By "Template" are you referring to a View Template (VT)? We have a "_RESET" VT set up in all our project. It has All Parameters set to Include and all values in each parameter category checked to display Nothing is turned Off. Then after that is applied to a view, I can change to a correct VT and the settings usually change correctly.

just curious, what was your workaround.....?

Sorry Everyone, I figured it out. It was very dumb. The views had 2 different elevations, one was based on "GRADE" and someone else I guess made their own elevation called "Grade". Didn't dawn on me that the elevations weren't the same, because they were named so similarly (and I didn't even think others in the office would dream of making their own elevations) until I was making screenshots to put them up here.

No need to apologise, we’ve all been there - figuring out why things don’t appear the way they should is just something we all have to contend with.

I had a similar problem just today, turns out my view template didn’t have Filters checked so I was fiddling with filters thinking some parameter was causing unexpected behaviour until I realised that the template wasn’t controlling the filter settings.
