Eric, from my experience, keep the Pointclouds on you're Local C Drive
I worked with vast datasets 100gig+ on Projects and tried BIM360, but it does not support larger Pointsets yet; also, you get issues syncing. But, you can reduce the Point Clouds dramatically in Recap Pro by splitting them up and reducing them to 100mm point distance. Then load selectively. It makes a big impact and is far easier to work with.
PS switch of Point snaps while working in Revit.

Hi,

I have a situation where we have a very large number of scan files (3d point clouds) for an university project and we are experiencing problems accessing these files in BIM 360. They are so many files that speed of access is affected.

Is there any best practices to work with large Revit files including numerous cloud point files in ACC? or any other processes that will be performant for us?

Thanks

Thank you for the question @eric_bernier!

From reviewing the help topic About Autodesk Docs Connected Drive Integration with Revit it doesn’t look like point cloud files stored on BIM 360 are currently supported for linking in Revit (using the Desktop Connector).

This doesn’t mean that this workflow can’t work, but that one or more of the following may occur:

Doesn’t work at all.

Works with issues.

Stops working due to changes in future.

One thing that I would suggest trying, due to the large size of point cloud files, would be to precache the cloud models (this would be true for Desktop Connector with BIM 360 as well as other cloud sync’d solutions).

To precache the files or containing folder, right click on the item through Windows and select the Sync option.
