Log Walls Schedules

Good morning everyone.

We are Log Homes company and our goal is have standard model homes developed in revit achieving the BIM output(take off schedules) from all the elements in the model.

-I know you can create log walls using sweeps or also creating the logs as a single elements, one of my questions is, what is the best way to get the log schedule from the wall? I would prefer to use a wall that to deal with single elements for sure, maybe someone know another way to do it?

-At the office we also use Archicad and you can export IFC or RVT models, the question here is, can you edit or do something with the elements exported from archicad?

Several ways to do that and each depend on the level of detail you are trying to achieve; however, simply just using sweeps is neither one of them nor really efficient/suitable for such...

You could use Curtain Walls/Systems,
you could use walls + beam systems,
you could use pattern based or line based components.
you could use dynamo
or could buy an addin/plugin which is programmed to detail and quantify such construction!!

You need to provide a sample image and I am pretty sure more than a couple of members will give you more than one idea

If you create a log wall using any of the methods mentioned, the BIM output from that wall(material schedule) will show every log used in the wall with sizes and dimensions?

Attached a couple of pictures for reference, those wall were created with sweeps.

The easiest way is using curtain walls with mullions for logs and mullion schedule for log QTO.

Wall sweeps, whether built-in the wall type or placed externally, is probably my least favorite option. But if you want to do it, then you will need to create parts and use parts schedule for log QTO.

Yes the output will account for every Log (ie: mullion) used in terms of quantities and any other information which you decide to add. The methods slightly differs from one another only in terms of Complexity and level of detail...

The list provided in the previous reply is more or less from easiest to more complicated. The example below is using a Curtain Wall (the quickest and easiest)

This is what you can get from a curtain wall and a CW Mullion Schedule

And this is how the wall is set up

There are also plugins which does this too using Structural framing, Structural columns and Structural Connections in a relatively less time than you would normally spend modeling and detailing yourself .... Example: A plugin which was mentioned on the forum a few days back on a similar topic

You add and remove grids >> for head and jambs ... then substitute with a curtain wall panel windows and or doors

- Add one curtain grid on the left and one on the right of the planned opening

- Select the mullions between the 2 grids, unpin and delete

- TAB select each grid in the opening and Remove segment, then click the segment inside the opening

- TAB select the panel inside the opening (unpin if it is pinned) and change to to a Curtain wall door type

The method using a curtain wall to create log walls and schedule it is awesome and helpful, thank you very much.

I have a some questions:

1. When you create the vertical grids for openings(doors and windows), is there a way to make the grid not to cut the horizontal mullions at the top of the openings? or join the mullions afterward? to be able to have the accurate log wall schedule.

2. At the corners when the walls intersect each other, is there a way that the wall recognize that intersection(notching)?

3. Is there a way to modify every log mullion in its horizontal profile? to create notches at the corner intersection

4. When you use this method to create stud framed walls you should use a curtain wall embedded in a regular wall?

You can include/exclude segment(s) when add grid.

You can add/remove segments from an existing grid (demonstrated in in screencast I posted before)

Hi again, after 2 years I'm following up on this topic and also I want to say thank you for all the valuable information provided, it is been super good and helpful.

I'm revisiting the matter because I want to implement this as my initial log panel source, right now we do all the panel extraction in Autocad, basically manually.

I created a little revit model where I'm able to extract all the mullions information and create a schedule. I'm able to also break the mullions with a wall opening and the pieces are reflected in the schedule.

I want to be able to label every log(mullion) with its information(as showing in the panel sample). It is possible to do that automatically or with tags?

I don't know if I'm going in the right direction here? some input would be great.
