topic Face Based Family Not Cutting when Nested into Generic Model Family in Revit Architecture Forum

Hello all. I am trying to build and overhead door panel family with windows in it, but am having trouble getting the windows to cut the panel. Working in Revit 2025.

I started with a generic model family template to make the 2' high door panel (basic extrusion tied to reference planes). Then I made a generic model face based family for the window (extrusion for the frame, extrusion for the glass, see snips below). I have "cuts with void when loaded" option selected in the window family, but when I load it into the panel family, it does not cut anything. The "cut geometry" tool does not work when I try to select the panel extrusion and then the nested window family (or vice versa). I tried adding a void extrusion to the window family, but I cannot constrain the dimensions of it in section, and it erases the frame extrusion (but not the glass oddly), and it still doesn't cut anything when loaded into the panel family. I feel like the void extrusions used to work more logically years ago, but they seem to behave differently in the newer versions of Revit; I don't get it. I tried adjusting the categories of both families from Generic Model to Doors, but that did not seem to help either.

I want the windows to be a nested family so I can array them to adjust how many windows there are in the panel. Perhaps there is a better way of building this overhead door panel family overall?

Top: Panel Family w/ nested window family arrayed

Bottom: Window family

Window family Left View:

Do you have a void in the face based family?

Did you cut the host solid in the face family with the void?

Did you host the face based family on the 3d panel in the parent family?

Cut with void when loaded is not needed to be ticked if you follow the steps above.
