Materials in nested families

I am working on a project where we have multiple linked models in our main model. In these linked models we have nested joinery/casework families.

I have transferred all the material and finishes parameters and the materials from the main model to the linked models and nested families. But when I tag the materials in the main model, the tags are showing blank.

What is the procedure to have the tags showing a material/finish? For example a benchtop/counter needs to be stainless steel, do I have to assign the material in component, then in the nested family and then in the linked model?

I have tried several ways with out any luck.

Project Materials RULE always.

...I think I know what's going on. Are you Tagging the actual Family Geometry (which has the Material) or a Symbolic Representation of the Geometry? Go to a Model View and try your Material Tag. Does it populate now?

....I accidentally blew out what I posted before. Hopefully you saw that or got it.

I am tagging the actual Family Geometry. In the parameter field have tried assigning by category, and then by category in the nested family and assigned materials to the parameters in the linked model. I have also tried assigning the material all the way through and tag still comes up empty.

What parameter field is the Material Tag reporting? Does that parameter field have a value at the source?

It is tagging the keynote. I have tried with and without any value at the source.

I get same result.

I thought we were talking about Material Tags. There is no Keynote Parameter Field available in a Material Tag.

I am sorry, I forgot to mention I am not using material tags. I am using Keynote Material tags.

Just to be clear I am only having this tagging issues with nested families within the linked models. The nested families inserted directly into the main model are fine, no issues.

The Keynote material tag will only work on the element that it is assigned to. This means that if your family has a filled region over it or the geometry turned off in the view you are trying to tag then it won't be able to find a material to reference because it will be trying to keynote the filled region or symbolic lines rather than the 3D geometry.

Can you also double check that you have assigned keynotes to the materials in the linked files. These cannot be assigned from the model they are linked in to.

Are all the keynotes from the same keynote file, and is that keynote file loaded into the Parent Project? Path and file name must be the same.

One other thing: View Visual Style. Not Wireframe.

Yes they using same file. The materials have also been transferred across from the parent/main model.

Okay, let's back up. Originally you said you wanted tags showing a material/finish. Then you said later that you are using Material Keynotes. So, is it the Project's Material/Finish that you want the Tag to report or the Keynote Text?

We are using a keynote tag that reports the keynote text of the material as per attached.

The issue I am having is the order of attaching the materials to objects at the various steps with the linked models.

Whether to assign a material or by category.

If I insert the nested family directly into the main model the tags show correctly (the material) but when it is from the linked model it shows blank.

It is not getting the info from the keynote file. It is getting info from material as in the clip I attached.

NOTE: I did not set the project up I came in late in the piece and am trying to get materials to show in the tags and schedule.

I'm just following the bread crumbs you are leaving behind you. You said you were using a Material Keynote Tag - not a Material Tag. Which is it?

BTW: your screenshot only shows a Project Material's Identity Tab information. There's nothing more to take away from it. Certainly no dots are connected because of that screenshot.
