I have got an apartment building where each individual unit is drawn as a separate Revit model linked back into the full building model. When I placed the units in the host model, I set their display settings to "custom" then set the "Linked View" to Floor Plan, so that detail items I had placed in the linked models would show up in the host model, on the floor plan drawing. This worked for the floor I had placed these unit models on, but now every other floor in the host model is showing just the detail items from the linked models.

All of my linked models are placed on the sixth floor of the host model, with the walls/doors/components showing only on my sixth floor, but then any detail item shows on floors 1-6.

How do I get detail items in linked models to only show on a single view in the host model?

That doesn't make sense. A View Override wouldn't effect other Views unless they were Dependent Views. Maybe I'm misreading you, but it sounds like you are saying that you changed the Link display to By Linked View in one view only. and it effected the Link display in other Level Plan Views. Is that right?

I tried excluding the Revit links from the template to control them by view, but the problem is I'm going to have instances of these same links on each floor, just in different locations. The problem family in question is a detail item I made and added to the unit models, but I've tested drawing random detail lines, dimensions, etc. to individual unit models and reloading the link in the host, always with the same result.
Just can't seem to get detail items from the linked models to show on 1 level in the host model.

I can't upload the actual project, but here's a quick test project I made that's giving me the same problem.

There are two instances of the Child Project linked into the Parent Project, on Levels 1 and 2.
With the view settings for the links set to show the Child Project's detail items in the Parent Project, it ends up showing detail items from the first floor on the second floor, and vice versa. Levels 3 and 4 also show both instances' detail items despite the view ranges not being set to show the walls of the instance.

To fix it, you will need to exclude the Link display from the View Template and set it independently:

- by Linked view for views you want to show linked details

- by Host view for others

I hadn't noticed this part of your response at first, but the only problem with this is then if I place another instance of the same linked model on that floor, I have to turn it back to "by Linked view" to see the linked details, which in turn will show the "floating" detail items showing up below the top floor's instance.

However, this should work for me since I just remembered I'm going to have to create new linked models for the apartment units on the first few floors, as they will be framed differently from the upper floors. The top 3 or 4 floors should be fine to have the detail items showing from above, as they should have instances of the same linked model in the same place, then on the first two floors I'll turn those links' displays off, and have new links for those units.

Thanks everyone for the quick responses.
