2024 Toposolid error when attempting to split

I can get the toposolid to split with a very simple one-line sketch, but I get an error every time I try to split with a sketch that has multiple line segments.

Anyone else having the same problem?

Hello, I have the same issue with split and also the Sub-Divide function. Odd that only you and I seem to be experiencing this.

I am trying to change a road into a different material from the remaining toposolid. The outline of the road from the topographic survey (imported CAD) should be able to be picked as a boundary, however if I do this, boom: "error cannot complete." If I make a freehand, inaccurate boundary near it, well then it works like it should. If I trace the boundary first in detail lines, then copy them to the clipboard and paste them within my split to make the boundary, well they still don't work. This seems like a really simple function that Revit should be able to do. I miss sub-regions already.

Here's a purged and trimmed-down model. I am trying to split off the lane, or the driveway, or the sidewalk...heck, just anything would be nice! None of them can be used as a boundary without giving an error.

Oh, and this is happening in my other project too with a survey created by a different surveyor.

Split just does not work and it is a major issue. The only workaround I came up with is to copy the entire site, then edit the plan sketches of each individually, but you lose much of the elevation data at the boundary and it needs to be manually adjusted. Unfortunately I don't think my office will be upgrading to 2024 until we come up with a solution.

I'm having no issues Sub-Dividing your Toposolid. Am I missing something?

Certainly in this day and age, 3D Modeling Software would be able to model different materials on a surface without needing to draft them in 2D on the site plan, right?

Yes, please go into the site plan view and try to use the LANE, or driveway, or curb or anything shown in the survey as a boundary for the split. And thanks for looking at this...it's been frustrating me for days.

This is what I get with Split or Sub-Divide: "An error occurred during the sub-divide action. The sub-divide can not be completed.."

Hi, splitting simple things is not the issue. The issue is using the survey (in the site plan view) as a boundary to create the actual splits in the surface, like concrete, asphalt in their actual location. Dropping a random rectangle in the middle of the site works, but is unhelpful.

Okay...this then? Used pick lines to pick sidewalk line work.

BTW: I inset the sketch linework slightly.

So then it seems that a sketch cannot be created if it cuts through the middle of an elevation point. That seems to be why none of the actual boundaries of the survey can be picked as boundaries. It would explain why your sketch boundary works and mine do not.

Yes, that's the problem. If I use pick lines and offset them 1/8", then the sketch can be created.

I am also having the same issue when splitting topo solids. The splitting function in previous version took time but at least worked.

Hi, so like I posted above, the problem could be your boundary lines are exactly on top of the elevation "points" that form the surface. This was the case for me as I was tracing a survey in CAD and of course all of the points are exactly on the boundaries. You will just have to be OK with it not being accurate. If you offset your boundary by 1/8", then it should work.

Hello there! yes! it's really frustrating 😪 if you need to obey a line like a lane o street, but finally, I used the OFFSET tool to solve this problem. First, draw the line that you need to split, and next apply a little offset to solve and works, I hope this trick helps you.!

I am having the exact same issue and I think it is very frustrating this is happening in such an "advanced" software. Especially when you are creating a master plan and have multiple roads. Autodesk really needs to solve this bug.

Hi Brian, are you able to mark the comment about offsetting the boundary lines (so they do not lie on top of elevation points) as the solution? Otherwise people keep asking the same question and have to scroll through all the comments to see what the fix is.

Is it still an issue in Revit 2025? I'm planning to update mine since I just spent 4 days grading a site for the roads, and it doesn't cut because I set many elevation points within the boundaries. It's so frustrating. I hope Revit will fix this as soon as possible because I'm working on my thesis and I can't eff this up.

it is not an advanced software it is utter crap. By design, like microsoft they add and remove features constantly to keep users guessing. we should boycot this

I had the same problem and this has worked for me - thanks. I had put elevation points exactly along the line I wanted to subdivided, thinking this would somehow be more accurate or efficient for Revit.

AUTODESK - please update this error message to be more helpful and read something like "Cannot split or subdivide toposolid through an elevation point - please offset split line from any points".
