How to edit family types?

I'm trying to make some alternative area tags and so far have managed to duplicate one type:

How do I edit M_AreaTag 2 without it effecting M_AreaTag? I'm looking to add serveral more all of which will contain different fields but what chosing the type in the dropdown as in above image, doesn't seem to change which actual type I'm editing so any changes to one type is reflected across all of them.

I would right click and the family tag and edit. The saved as new family name. Then load the saved family into the project.

The saved as new family name load it into project. Now you see new family added to the list.

I'm not 100% sure what you try to do. But open the family in family editor and you have more options to create new parameters etc. You can edit and create family types in a project, but that will be limited to what was set up in family editor.

If you need help accomplishing something specific, post the family.

Well, I thought what I was trying to do would be easier than it is 🤣.

With rooms, you have several different tags available for the M_Room Tag family:

with these, you can select a room tag with area and a room tag with volume.

What I am trying to do is replicate this with the M_Area Tag family:

Basically, I'd like to add addtional types to the family so that I could have one type for name and area and another type which has name, area and comments for example.

Whenever I click on the M_Area Tag, I can edit the family, but cannot see how you add additional types.

You create create family types in a project by duplicating. In the Type Properties Dialog click Duplicate.

This lets you set different Type property values. I think the problem you are finding is the family you are attempting to make types for perhaps does not have the type properties needed to do what you like. I think you are wanting to control text shown in the tag like a room tag does? The standard area tag does not have that as part of the family. In that case you need to open the tag in the family editor and add some parameters and connect them to stuff and then create new types there. In this example I added a visibility parameter to the area shown on the are tag so i can have one type with it showing and another type with it turned off.

Hi,

Do you mean an extra type within your project as simple as this (duplicate see printscreen)? Or do you mean additional parameters to choose from, which you can add inside the family editor?

I don't need any parameters, just additional types...

I can get as far as duplicating the types:

and when I open the family to edit it, I can see these options under family types:

the problem I have is how do you switch between the types so that whatever changes are made are to a specific type and not all of them.

So, if I now delete this highlighted label:

it disappears for types M_Area Tag, Type 1 and Type 2.

How do I select Type 1 so that when I delete the label, it ONLY applies to Type 1 and not Type 2 and M_Area Tag types?

Right, the problem is to make a different type that does not include that 150, you can't just "delete" it. You DO need parameters to do this. You attach a visibility parameter to that 150 label. The parameter makes it visible in one type and NOT visible in the other type.

At the outset, it doesn't look as intuitive as other families but once you understand how, it starts to make sense.
