The new product versions of the following year have been for several years now released April of the running year and usually within 30 days from the What’s New announcement.

There is no reason for it to be any different this time. This way they can issue the first couple of fixes before 2026 🙂

Hello!

Software releases often follow a naming convention that includes the upcoming year to indicate the version. This approach helps make it clear that the software is the latest version and can be used for the forthcoming year. Autodesk Revit 2026 being launched in 2025 is a typical practice in the software industry to ensure users are getting the most up-to-date features and improvements for the year ahead.

Thank you!

Yeah the way I understand it now is that 2026 launches in 2025 but is not officially released until 2026. I see it sort of like an open beta or a 12 month development cycle / work out the bugs until calling it official. Which isn't uncommon, just how you interpret the word "released".

@Simon_Weel wrote:

2026 is set to release in 2025?

Never understood this scheme. But maybe it means "we release it now and next year it will be stable enough for a production environment?"

For eternity, car model years were based on which January they will be sold. Traditionally a new car model is released in fall. So the model released in fall 2025 will be a 2026 model since that also will be the model in January 2026. In the US this naming is based on law. And unless every manufacturer releases a product on January 1, this seems the most logical way to include the year.

I'm not sure how Tesla does it since they have rolling changes and not model years. And for software, there obviously is no law, or a need to release annually. That is why we use Windows XP or 11, and not Windows 2026.

This annual naming scheme is very common among software, especially now with subscription being a requirement.

For Revit, a new year means a new file format and loss of compatibility. So, it makes sense to use the year or a new full number.

I personally decided to install a new version in December/January. That way I still have a relatively new version, but hopefully all major bugs are worked out. I usually do like the small new features or improvements of existing features. So, I don't have patience to wait longer than January 🙂

Which isn't uncommon, just how you interpret the word "released".

Released = released to regular subscribers like myself. That (likely) happens this April. That is the "final" version. Of course, it never is final and bugs get fixed for 1-2 years.

Many months before the above release, there are beta testers and tests by add-in developers. This isn't made public and everyone involved likely has to sign an NDA. This is beta testing, but also the way a 3rd party software company can have their new add-in ready when R2026 is released to all subscribers. This wouldn't be called a "release".

It probably is hard to always hit the 12-month window and fix all bugs. Maybe they should keep that more flexible and work a new Revit version at minimum to a SP1 or SP 2 level. But this may be impossible since many problems may never happen in beta testing, But only with the millions of users in the real World.
