can you cut/slice RP ?

if so, how?

Doesn't look like it. Might not be a bad idea to propose.

But just to be clear, those lines are only a partial representation of the planes, as by definition, a plane extends infinitely in two dimensions (X,Y, for example). That's why you can align to a reference plane even if an object is beyond the extents of the shown line.

you sure about that? when i do RP, it gives a starting point and an ending point with (3D) at each end.

also....I have numerous RP usually it sets to the default <none> but now its set to another plane.

how do I set it back OR how do I set it to another RP?

Again, the lines drawn are just a representation of a portion of that plane. See below, when I select the align tool and click on the reference plane, it shows a dashed line to show that the plane continues beyond the line representation, so I can align the model line to the top right so its on the same plane.

That's just for visualization. (Think levels. They work the same way.) When it says 3D, you are adjusting the visual representation in all views. When it says 2D, that is for the current view only. The same plane can have different visualizations but, by definition, a plane is infinite.

back to my one of my original question....is there a way to switch to a deault RP?

What do you mean by "cutting"?

If it isn't possible, the reason may not be apparent.

You can associate ref planes with a scope box to crop their visible lines. That doesn't change ref planes extent, which is infinite.

A plane is a flat, two-dimensional surface that has no thickness and extends infinitely in all directions. (Geometry 101)

In Revit: The line displayed only represents the graphical extents to the plane. However, its mathematical extents has no edges or boundaries. However, similar to Level datum, the visual/graphical extent may be croped or alterd (not split or cut) in two ways

A Scope Box (applies to all views)
The View's crop Region (applies to a single view)

Should you wish to reduce those extents further, you would need to adjust the 2D extents which is toggled on automatically by the Crop Region or Scope Box

To change the subcategory of the Reference Plane, simply select it and from the drop down menu on the properties palette change it to the appropriate one. See GIF Below

As for the default subcategory setting to <none> have you tried changing to <none> before placement, drawing a ref plane, then checked what it is set to if you tried drawing a ref plane again?

Does it remember the last subcategory it was set too?

If that doesn't do it you might try deleting the subcategory and remaking it. By deleting it it might reset the default to <none>.
