Railing in RCP

My co-worker modeled some ceiling moldings using Railing tool and they don't not show up in RCP. Is there anyway to make them show or he has to model them using other methods? Thanks.

Railings do not display in Reflected Ceiling Plan views, even if they intersect the View Range. Similar thread below:

Autodesk shoud change this. I have worked on several theater buildings and there are many times when railings MUST show up in the reflected ceiling plan. If the sofware allowed the railings to show up in an RCP, then it would be easy to adjust visibility graphics to hide them in a view. With the current sofware, there is no user option, only an Autodesk mandate. Unfortunate.

You can always duplicate plan views and turn off all object except for railing. On sheet drag the plan view and overlay it on top of your ceiling plan.

I realize this is an old thread but I just ran across this issue today (probably have before too but I don't remember)…

If you set an underlay of the same floor you're working on (doesn't matter if it's set to Plan or RCP orientation, the railings show up and you can use a linework override to make them visible in the RCP. This would be a slightly better option than overlaying a separate plan view

I agree with post # 3 above. Autodesk should change this. It should be the user who controls the visibility of railings in RCP views, not Autodesk.

I too have been working in projects where it was necessary to show some railings in RCP views.

I completely agree and think it shows that this is possibly a bug since they show up as soon as you set an underlay.

It's a silly restriction.

Another "Autodesk knows what you need better than you do" feature? Clearly this was a decision someone made with premeditation, but why? This should be picked up, and quickly, in the next service package.

I'm aligning to a platform with a railing in RCP view and I don't understand why Revit has this hardcoded rule-- if railings were shown in RCP and you didn't want them for some reason, you could always turn them off.

The underlay solution doesn't work if the railings are in an external reference.

You can go to a floor plan, TAB select the railing from the link and copy paste it aligned in place. Go back to the RCP and draw your platform based on the local railing now visible. Hide it, delete, nuke it whatever when you are done. I know it stinks but what can we do?

@ToanDN, I know the thread is ancient, but the workaround would be to enclose the rail in the plan region and set the primary range below current level and the view depth to unlimited. Railing will show and, of course, all other objects that might obscure the view like floor or stair need to be turned off or set to transparent.

It works for stairs as well.

We work on historic buildings where the railing posts often drop down below the floor. I'm very disappointed that after taking the trouble to model these correctly, they will not show up in the RCP. Please fix, Autodesk.

Just came across by this post today looking for a workaround. Thanx for the underlay option.

But, this should not be a workaround. An o.o.t.b. solution would come in use for many projects. The simple example of a railing mounted to the side of a floor edge, concealing the side of the underlaying ceiling, should be a sufficient argument for Autodesk to actually mend this problem.

Guys, it's just a view range problem... if you manage correctly the value in the view range, the railings will appear!

It's not about managing the view ranges "correctly" - it's just a work around similar to the underlay in that railings will appear if they are in the "Beyond" range of the view. So if the top of the Primary Range is below the railing, but the View Depth extends above the railing, then the railing will show.

The issue with this is that then everything else in that range shows half toned. So if you have wall mouldings or cornices at ceiling level and move the Top of the Primary View Range to a lower value yes the railings will show, but now all the ceiling fixtures and equipment show half toned.

Over 10 years on and it seems like we still don't the have the ability to view an entire category in RCPs... Would love to see this fixed.

Had the same issue today as the original poster. If something is a 3d object and cut by a view plane, its visibility should be controllable in that view, no matter what direction that view is aimed. My team used the underlay workaround, which was helpful, but its perplexing that system families don't act the same way as other 3d objects.

We adjusted the view range but then also had to add filters to our Demo RCPs to get demolished items in the beyond range to correctly show demolished, as well as invisible model lines into a bunch of ceiling families so that even when in the beyond range they'll display correctly (i.e. not half toned). Underlay and linework for every RCP didn't seem feasible. It's a pretty frustrating limitation, and there doesn't seem to be a better way to model mouldings and cornices, just more options with big drawbacks.

Right. I tried the "accepted" solution to no avail. But I think this thread is more about "seeing" the railing on a floor above or actually at the ceiling.

My situation is a regular rail (mezzanine) and the railing is at floor level and 42"high. for my RCP view (lighting) I want to show the railing to show where the mezzanine ends.

Using underlay shows everything from the level below, so that doesn't work for me. I tried a plan region just where the railing is, but can't make it show up.

my only workaround is:

- show underlay (so I see where the wall below is that shows the end of the mezzanine).

- draw an annotation line where the railing is

- un-show the underlay

This is just dumb since it shows a line instead of railing, and if the railing changes, it doesn't change. Good enough for this specific case, not good enough for what we expect from a good software
