Does a nested family have a auto-void function?

Hello, mates.

As the title says, I'm wondering whether family data has an auto-void/clip function or not.

Before, I took a look at the Revit Structural Project sample data (Japanese ver) by Revit 2021 and found that the one of the nested family(pile) has (probably "has" is a wrong word to choose) a void which is located in the same position as the pile (refer to the pics "001" and "002").

But I once created a mere cube with Extrusion in a rfa file whose template is "Generic Model" and insert it into another rfa file like the first one, I couldn't make hole in the host family (refer to the pics "003" and "004").

Does anybody know reason for it? I'm still not sure why it doesn't make it.

In the nested family's properties panel, is the "Cut with Voids When Loaded" parameter checked ?

It's a limitation. You can't cut family geometry with a void in a nested family. You can cut Project System Families with a void in a loadable family (if Cuts with void when loaded is checked in that family).

I think I read you wrong. Are you wanting a structural framing element to cut. Edit Family and make one of the Beams visible in Coarse Detail Level via the Beam's Visibility Settings. Typically, there is no geometry visible in Coarse. Just Medium and Fine.

If you want void nested family, use face base family and have void cut through the face base. Once you load to your main family, it will cut any surfaces.

I think what your screenshot shows is a joined condition. You don't need a void in the family to do that. Just use the Join Geometry Tool on the Modify Tab in the Project environment. Join Geometry will remove volume at the union of 2 geometries. Use Switch Join Order to change which geometry gets volume removed from it.

BTW: if you want to verify whether or not it's joined, use the Unjoin Geometry Tool and select the pile.

What exactly are you using the family for and what element in the project that you want the family to cut a hole from?

I'm relatively new to Revit so the question I wrote in this thread is not at that high level.

But you got one of the points that I was struggleing with - double volume included.

I will keep it in my mind when I use both host and nested families whose domains are overlapping.

I duly noted that using a "face-based" family is necessary when I make a hole in a host(that) family.

Maybe, it's not possible to make a Generic Model family a "face-based" family like walls, is it?

I'm sorry for not clearing my question at the first time.

What exactly I want to do is mainly three.

One: eventually, I want to make a sheet with a front view of a bracket model in a project file composed by at least a main family (multiple plates) and bolt family.

Two: it would be great if I "DONT" use void family to make holes on the plates because it needs less efforts to create a hole model until making a sheet but I want plates volume to be precise given holes for bolts.

Three: Bolt families don't need to be shown in a front view when I make a sheet with it.

Therefore, I was wondering whether there is a way to make a hole when I insert, let's say, Generic family into another family/project family but host family is also Generic Model.

I think it's very lazy of me but was eager to pursue more efficiency.

are you trying to model structural connections in the family. You don't need to. Revit can do it for you in the Project - automatically and parametrically. Very BIM.

It is possible. I use these family if I want to cut a hole in a family instead of using each individual void. See attached

Yes you can join generic models together in the project and holes will be created automatically. They don't need to be face based families and they don't need to have any voids.
