We have views in our revit models for DOCUMENTING EXISTING WORK. They are the only views set to existing phase. We just draw what is existing in the field and get out of those views.
For demo, the way I think of it is ANY work done to what is existing is new work, this includes demolishing anything there. The second you take a hammer to an item you are doing new work. Revit only needs Existing and New phase to work properly on renovations. Setting the phase to new and the view filter to previous+demo for the demolition views and setting the phase to new and the filter to previous+new for the new construction views. If you demo in the same phase an item was created in, Revit considers it Temporary (temporary is not really a phase, but it is a state that revit shows slightly different, this is for things like curtain walls that are temporarily separating work areas. The problem has always been how to tag existing rooms when the demo views are set to new construction. This is the issue the video I posted addresses. Hope this helps.

Good Morning,

When creating a demolition plan from the new construction phase (because our demo takes place in new construction) but have phase filter set to "Show Previous + Demo". All elements show up correctly and as expected, except Room Tags. The only actual rooms you can tag are the rooms that were made in New Construction, while none of the Rooms created in Existing can be referenced, which are what we need to reference in the demo plan, where demolition work is being performed. There are, of course, workarounds but we were wondering if there was an actual solution to this problem, or if one is currently being developed.

thank you,

Guys, it wasn't always like this. I remember prior to the tenure or Carl Bass as CEO, Autodesk made absolutely amazing products that were stable with world class documentation. Not sure what happened in-house, but it seems to have been a lot of UX designers with no professional background in AEC trying to add as many "new features" as possible. This in turn is because its much easier to write code, than to read and debug existing code. As a result, very basic things that users have been begging for in terms of functionality and stability have been totally ignored in favor of the more glamourous career building "new features" (i.e. tools to build twisty skyscrapers)

I have a good workaround for tagging existing rooms on demo plans. Here is a 12min video showing how to do it. Once it is setup it only takes a couple mins to update. Does not require cad files or overlaying views. It works for all disciplines.

https://autode.sk/3NrlmTv

-Patrick

pj_mclaughlin@comcast.net

If you want to show existing conditions on your demolition plans and you are doing your demolition in the new work plans, you are shooting yourself in the foot, no matter how you think about it. Does the demo take place while the new rooms are being put in? No, it takes place before the new work and can be it's own unique phase. Stop limiting yourself according to what you've been taught about this.

Your workflow maybe useful for older versions of Revit. In newer versions, you can create Filters based on Phasing so you can show actual existing rooms on demo plans quite easily.

I don't see any limitation to using the software the way it was designed. The software was not designed to work that way. I choose to swim downstream, not against the current. We have not had any issues with phasing.
I can't watch your video as it is blocked by the company policies but I'm assuming that, like the issue at hand, that you are still applying demolition in the new work phase. Doesn't that seem contradictory to showing existing conditions (rooms) on demolition plans?
