Hi everyone!

We have an architectural model file with some views and sheets in it.

We have sent it to an outsorcing collaborator who used it as a linked Revit file (not central model) in order to develope some aditional and sheets. Meanwhile we were creating other views inside the original file.

At this moment we need to merge both files in one so views and sheets come together.

Is it possible? How could we get it?

Thanks!

The Lnked Revit file can be merged into the host file by Binding :

select the Linked File > Modify > Bind Link - the Linked File becomes a Group inside the host file

Ungrouping the entities from the former Linked File become now editable and incorporated into the host file

Views and sheets are not imported into the host file when a Revit file is linked ( many ,prefer to purge the Views and Sheets before delivering their file to be linked ) that is why the Views and sheets of the original file that was linked can not appear in the host file.

All the models (architecture, mechancial - many floor models files) are linked in a single base file and i would like to remove all the linked files and make it as as single revit file..

Please confirm, and if it yes please guide me .

Regards,

Ashok Sridharan

hi Ashok,

Unlike other Autodesk products ( and I'm refering here specially at ACA ), Revit was conceived to do all work in a single file. That is why Revit needs more powerful computers to work on.

Even so , if the file increases too much it will become difficult to manage the whole project in a single file.

Another reason for working in several different files linked together is the necessity to work in a team with consultant engineers and other colaborators that are not in the same location( LAN) with the main architecture team and there is no WAN connection to allow using worksharing with a single central file.

Yes it is possible to merge all the linked Revit file to the host file. In fact ,as I already mentioned above , Revit was conceived to work in a single file.

Here are some advices:

Before linking Revit files (of Structure and MEP) into the host file , create Worksets dedicated to these files ( one workset for Strucure file, one for HVAC, , one for plumbing and one for electrical). Alocate the linked file , each to its workset. This will control the visibility and also will allow an easier work on the host file .

When merging the linked file , using Bind , the Group created will be kept into the dedicated workset made before. If you want to Ungroup ( I don't advice to do it , as long as Group allows interaction with object from outside the group) all its components will stay in a single workset and can be turn on/of visibility

The linked file as much as the merged file allows to activate the views from the original file : from Properties > VGO > Revit Links > Display Settings > change to By Linked View. This option will show the dimensions and annotations from the original file views. There is a problem with vertical sections as long that their position is not preserved

Architecture and Structure is good to be from the beginning in the same file , as they are too much interconnected. So future changes will be no problem...But MEP files, I think, could be a problem, once you have had them merged into the main file.

make some tests to assure that all is ok

for better understanding, I suggest to have a look on Autodesk University's conferences:

http://au.autodesk.com/au-online/classes-on-demand/class-catalog/2012/autodesk-building-design-suite/supersize-me-worksets-with-links-object-protection-families-versus-groups-versus-links#chapter=0

http://au.autodesk.com/au-online/classes-on-demand/class-catalog/2011/autodesk-revit-architecture/autodesk-revit-links-groups-and-documentation-how-to-make-it-really-work#chapter=0

best regards,

My commentary was directed to the statement: " I would like to created one revit file from linked files".

This is how I would do it. Before bind them links. I will bring in general project info, and few others ( depending what kind of project) as well as view templates using the transfer project standards.

In order for this to work. I would have all collaboratores to create view templates are of their views. Now, this can only work if good drafting standards are bieng used ( example: if other drafters/collaborators, instead of creating filters and using thevisibility graphics (vg), they have used just hide objects manually wiht the hide element command (EH), then you are lost!!

Once this templates have been created, you can go ahead and transfer all these to the new revit file and then bind models.

Here is when you start to create views and applying view templates.. then clean up and more clean up.

For sheet, well, revit title block families are not large, you can have your collaboratores sent you their families and then uploaded to the new revit file.

I had to do few of this couple months ago. It worked. Yes there is lots of clean up but that is it!! little modeling and lots of clean up.

Hi. I'm a bit late just for the record, after binding the linked model and getting the geometry, you can get its views and sheets by using the "Insert from file" tool.
