I am using Revit 2016 and I had one of the architects ask if Revit has the capability of illustrating the construction of the building to match the contractors schedule. So you would see the foundations going in, then the support structures, walls, roof, etc. Does Revit have this capability?

Thanks in Advance!

Revit does not have a Big Blue Button that you can click once to create such sequencing illustrations. It however, has enough tools for you to generate them yourself: Phasing, Object visibility control, worksets, etc...

You can use Revit's Phases functionality to create construction drawings that detail the work, as already mentioned. If you want to create presentation style animations of the building being constructed you'll want to look into Navisworks. Navisworks is packaged along with Revit in some of Autodesk's suite offerings.

Did they use Navisworks to generate the entire animation? What other software was necessary to achieve this?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
