Revit 2016 Freezing every 4 minutes

This is something a couple of people at my office have been plagued with, me and one other.

Revit 2016 Update 1 for Release 2 is installed.

When we connect remotely via the VPN to borrow a license, then disconnect, Revit tends to pause for about 20-30 seconds every 4 minutes or so. It doesn't matter if we are in a project or a family. If we connect to the VPN again it goes away.

IT has already checked to see if it is a server license issue, I have a port scanner running and it doesn't show any anomalies. I have Comodo Killswitch installed and I can see another process of Revit is opening while my current Revit process is timed out. I have already disabled all the Add-Ins and it still happens.

Just wondering if anyone that works remote via VPN can check to see if they have the same issue when they borrow a license and disconnect from the VPN?

Confirmed. I think its the same issue here but after reconnect and disconnect (a second time) it somehow stops hanging (Never timed the intervals though)

So something to add....

This morning I disconnected from the network with a borrowed license, so no internet connection at all. Was able to work for over an hour with no issues.

Something in Revit is definitely trying to connect back to the server. License server issue perhaps?

Did you try log off 360 while staying on the intranet/local network?

I was never logged in. We don't login at all.

But, since my Autodesk ID is tied to the subscription account, I'll try logging in and seeing if that does anything.

No, it didn't...

So for now I just leave my VPN connection going all day long.

I'm trying to reproduce the issue over here as well.

I logged in via VPN, borrowed a license, and logged off the VPN. I started a new model (same session as when I borrowed the license), and it may have lagged for a little after 3 minutes. It wasn't 20-30 seconds, maybe more like 10. Just enough for the spinning circle to appear and then go away. Then I worked in the file for about 15 more minutes and didn't see it happen again. I'm signed in with my Autodesk Id.

Is it fairly consistent every 4 or so minutes?

I'll keep testing on my end and update tomorrow.

Rebooted, connected to VPN, Opened Revit and signed in with my work related Autodesk ID. Borrowed a license then signed off the VPN.

First slow down (in minutes) was at 1:00, and stopped pausing at 1:20. Next pause was at 4:20 and stopped pausing at 4:45. After that it paused again at 9:20 and lasted until 9:40.

I disconnected the LAN cable and was interruption free for 10 minutes. (stopped)

After I reconnected the LAN cable it paused at 3:50 and lasted until 4:15.

Just throwing this out for consideration; it may or may not be the issue causing your lags. (My work computer is a desktop, and never leaves the office, so I have no experience with working offline in Revit on a borrowed license .)

Are any of your content locations (templates, family libraries, etc.) located on network drives? Have those locations and files been set up for off-line use on your laptop? If not, perhaps Revit is checking to see if the network locations are available, and the lag is Revit waiting until the effort times out, since they are not available.

@David_W_Koch Nope, my computer is setup for a jobsite, so all my libraries are on my computer.

FYI...this started when I updated to Update 1 for Release 2. I never had issues before that.

@Anonymous, could you post the journal from this test?

I tried again today but so far I haven't seen an issue. Can you try with Update 2 for R2? That's what I'm testing with.

@kathryn.langan I am hesitant on updating to Update 2 because the rest of the company hasn't updated yet...and that is 200+ workstations to update for just my issue.

Update: Upgraded to Update 2 for Release 2...Still freezing, but seems to happen more often now.

Hey Katie,

I see the same thing when I am out of the office using my laptop for teaching. I get the spinning wheel 4 or 5 times during a 2-2.5hr class. The spinning wheel lasts 5 seconds or so. I have seen the same issue posted by Scott Brown over at Revitforum.org too. Gremlins are in the machine.

I'm sorry for the delay getting back here. I took a look at the thread @loboarch Jeff mentioned on RevitForum as well.

I am going to try over the weekend to reproduce this on my end as well, keeping an eye on the event manager logs to see if it appears related to authentication as mentioned over in that thread. I'll update this weekend. It looks like you might have looked into this as well - did you also see the correlation?

I was testing this weekend and I definitely see the behavior (with Update 3 installed as well). I am going to submit it to our development team for further investigation. I'll post back when I have some new information.
