Joint wall ifc export

Hi everyone,

I have this issue with 2016 ifc export. when joining walls it sort of exports geometry correct, until I select the wall that is cut and it shows opening cuts as boxes. I did the same in 2015 and it was working fine.

This time I used curtain wall though, and replaced panels with wall in order to be able to cur them.

Has anyone experienced this and does anyone have suggestions or solutions? I will appreciate any solution! 🙂

Hello @KristineSlotina

There can be various reasons for this to occure...but in order not to jusmp into so many assumptions I suggest to check and confirm the basics.

Can you please verify in both files 2015 and 2016; Under which category are your cutting blocks modeled? (Mass or Generic?)
Is it possible to upload the rvt file (even if partially just for the wall in question)?

Other things to check:

In the Export options (Revit > Export > Export Options > IFC Options) there’s a map defined to export different categories from Revit to IFC. Check the categories listed there and verify if a specific mapping has been defined. You might need to go through the categories giving you issues in IFC and map them to a specific category.

There are no blocks modelled in Revit, neither 2015 nor 2016.

1) In 2015 I have modelled wall and additional wall next to it, in one of the walls there is door family placed, to cut both walls I have joined them.

2) in 2016 I used the same idea, modelled wall and additional wall (curtain wall) next to it. I have placed windows in one of the walls and to cut the windows in both of them, I joined geometry of the two walls. Since it is not possible to join panel and wall, I used curtain wall and replaced panels with basic wall. Hope this is clear enough.

I tried to replicate the same following the proceedure you discribed above but I somehow not getting the same issue in IFC!

It would be great if you could share at least a replica of this wall and its element on a separate rvt file in order to export ifc here to try figure out what is happening

Sorry for the delay long day ... See attached screencast. I tried in 2015 it seems curtain wall openings appear by default off. In 2016 you need to do that manually. The nasty part is to get them all at once 😕

Once you link the IFC into the main model, tab select the openings (the blocks) and use hide category from the Modify|RVT Link Menu > View tab

ok! but my issue is not really that i cannot hide the elements in Revit. I wanted to know why they are exporting in general if I cannot see the elements in the export view...
why is my ifc exporter creating there openings for curtain wall but not for any other joined wall? Also is that an issue in 2016 because I did not had any problems in 2015.

Appologies, I had the impression that all of the above questions are requests for a solution and NOT a clarification how REVIT functions.

It's not the Revit version it is the IFC mapping and the different types of elements used...In your 2015 file you most probably didn't use curtain wall and/or you have a different class mapping settings loaded into IFC options. In your 2016 file you have 2 elements which are not mapped properly 1 is the Curtain Wall System and the Second is the YV 430mm wall opening & the panel of the curtain wall. In other words; those elemsts do not have a definition in you IFC therefore translated to blocks.

PS: I tried to replicate on 2015 what you did in 2016 and it behaves exactly the same (Blocks for openings) ie: its is not a Revit version issue.

Solutions/Workarounds: (There are other methods different to the following but I am just listing what came into my mind at the moment)

Either to map/define (provide the proper definition) in IFC Option
Select and hide this cattegory (2 categoried actually - 1 for each of the above mentioned elements) as shown above - Easiest and most practical
Set categories giving you issues to Not Exported (However; that might conflict with other elements of the same category if is shared of used somewhere else in your model)
Model your wall differently using Generic Model Panels on a Surface instead of curtain wall system

Hope the above answers all of your questions

I tested in 2015 with the same setup and I see the blocks as well. It looks like the difference you're seeing in 2015 vs 2016 appears to be due to your modeling differences between the two releases, not a change in Revit functionality.

PS: I tried to clarify to @KristineSlotina why it behaves as such and gave the proper solution...As a matter of fact I also im'ed her the following LINK HERE (to whoever might be interested) which is (pretty much) more usefull that that Revitoped blog if one is to understand IFC Textensions and what the IFC allows and doesn't allow for in terms of symantec definitions of Revit Elements.

I understand that the best choice is to remodel the elements without the openings.
since the curtain wall openings cannot be selected in Revit, so I cannot hide them before export.
