halftone areas that are beyond - in elevation

I have a client that wants me to lighten areas of an elevation that are behind / beyond the clip offset. Basically the idea is show the whole project but hightlight the front face of the elevation. They always talk in AutoCAD terms. The most forward face would be the darkest, which would be like a normal elevation view. Then anything behind that would be like a halftone. So far the only thing I have come up with is a masking region on top of the areas that would be behind / beyond that has a transparency override applied in each view.

I could do it by selecting the individual objects and applying override in view but this is in a "sheet model" that has all of the model elements linked into the sheet model, so my only options for selecting "sub-objects" are to "hide elements". Thanks for any tips.

Bit depending on your project. Overlaying two sections on the sheet might do the trick or at least save a lot of manual work

Revit 2017 now has depth cueing (YouTube), which also might help solve your issue.

The new feature for Revit 2017 called Depth Cueing my be helpful if the elements are actually in the background. Check out the new features Videos and see what you think. Might be a reason to get going with 2017 sooner than later?

Thanks I may give that a try. I had thought of that, but was hoping for a better solution although I was pretty sure there wasn't one. IT's one of those, it's not AutoCAD issues! 😉

That sounds hopeful for the future. This project is currently in 2014 in IFC phase, so doubt they will want to upgrade to 2017! 😉

Make an inplace mass box over the areas that are beyond (in the back); give the mass a material and change the material transparency.

This should solve your problem. If you have other masses that you wish to hide put them on separate worksets and turn them off.

CGS had some tools for Revit 2014 which more or less replicated the Depth Queing in Revit 2017 mentioned by @SteveKStafford ... I'm not sure though if it's functionality extends to Linked Model Elevations...You can try their TRIAL DOWNLOAD; if it works your firm might as well consider a very small investment if they are planning to stick to 2014 for a while...it's not free

My first thought when I saw the Depth Queing in 2017 was that Autodesk aquired another plugin!! same like they did with Site Designer, Dynamo and others 🙂

For a free option; if it is just for presentation purposes (ie: no annotations/grids/...etc required) I would generate elevations from the 3D views rather than the normal Elevation View...I would do something similar to what @Anonymous proposed but using several glass panels with different shadings and different transparancies...and just place several across the depth of the model...

Yeah - I could do the same with a filled region and adjust transparency to get the correct shade. This is my works case scenario, althought duplicating the view may be a little more work, so second worst! 😉 thanks for the tip.
