At this point in time I'd have to recommend Lumion 7. We just grabbed a copy in our office and it has been excellent to work it. You get great quality interior and exterior results now very quickly, it's super easy and it feels just like playing a video game. It's not work when you have fun doing it! Unless you need the absolute cutting edge of photorealistic renderings Lumion is a great way to go and it's ridiculously easy to pick up.

You can just link directly from Revit to Max as well although I think the 2017 of Max also uses the new render engine in place of Mental Ray.

Obviously there are a multitude of alternatives out there that can either be plugged directly into Revit or accessed via Max. Which one you use will largely come down to personal preference.

Ditto! I'm actually kind of pissed. I just upgraded some files and was tweaking some settings only to find out the renderings are dark and over saturated.

Not a happy camper by any means. The whole point to Revit is having the renderings built in and not having to purchase 3rd party apps.

Now I obviously have no choice but to do so as the Autodesk built-in rendering engine is way below par.

Now I now and understand making the software compatible across multiple platforms and all, but for how old Revit is now, there's just no excuse.

If that's what you think then I fear you may be missing the 'whole point' of Revit or any other BIM authoring software... Personally I don't expect software like Revit to produce the quality of renders I would get from Max with a 3rd party plugin - if that was the case there would be no market for 3rd party plugins and a lot of people would be out of work... I am however quite pleased that VRay is no available as a plugin for Revit.

I'm sure once you get to grips with the new render engine you will be able to get images just as good as the ones you had before.

RPC plants as well.

I'm currently test Enscape which I like where it's going and it's ease of use. Looks like I'll need to look into some other 3rd party apps.

thanks for your reply.

@myhouse It's okay I understand your frustration. it's the nature of software development though that things change, sometimes for better others for worse. In reality if you understand the concepts of rendering I think you should be able to adapt to just about any engine although granted it may take a little while.

Now that the Revit uses Autodesk Raytracer rather than MentalRay things should be much more stable long term. As always you have the ability to use other render engines although I understand that it's a bit more tricky linking in with Revit than say Max but the options are continuing to grow.

@Anonymous We have a few folk here who really like Lumion too. I must confess though I'm not over sold on the quality and I'm finding the likes of Autodesk Live a more interesting avenue of development just now.

Yeah, that can be a concern if you need high quality lighting and such, however you should check out the features on the latest version of Lumion (7.0 just released a couple weeks ago). They're really bringing the quality up closer to a full-blown raytrace rendering. It's certainly not low quality any more...

I think Keith is missing the whole point, rendering is a major part of any good architectural design software, I don't know of any designer that wants to go to a third party application to do a render. There is a lot to be said for rendering straight from your design software. Really makes we wonder if Archicad is the way to go.

@Anonymous you're welcome to your opinion as am I to mine.

Any company that is producing professional rendering isn't doing it in a single package. Personally I prefer to chose the best tools for the job and quite honestly I don't expect any one to be a jack of all trades, and certainly not Revit. I'd much rather the developers spent their time and efforts dealing with the many other things that need fixed than trying to provide a work class 'click of a button' render engine.

As for rendering being a 'major part' of any architectural design software, tell me, how much rendering did you do in autocad and what render engine did you use?

Not all architectural practices are after high end professional renders, you did not need to be jack of all trades to produce good presentable renders if you were using good materials it was a matter of adding lights and bit of landscaping and pressing render. I agree Autodesk have there work cut out for them improving Revit, an instance based window legend would be great, but there was no need to remove something that was fully functional. It may not have been a feature you used, but plenty of us did.

There is still a perfectly good render engine in Revit it's just different from what was there before, you just need to learn to use it. As I said in my earlier post now this this is entirely within Autodesk's control I would expect to see further development to improve it.

I have to disagree. And I don't think this is about what anyone is missing from the BIM idea or "whole point" as you call it. Indeed, BIM means Building Information Modeling, and since Information can perfectly be expressed as a photo real render I don't see why I couldn't expect Revit to give me that, specially since it always did so up to 2017. Were they missing that "whole point" themselves, then? I don't think so.

You can perfectly expect Revit to do good renders because I've got them before apart from cost estimation, or production drawings and all other functionalities of BIM, because it's part of BIM. Nobody is missing any whole point on this end. This is a problem and I hope it's resolved asap, like many other users.
