Under Insert>>Import CAD, you can directly import DGNs. The DWG step is quite redundant.

Making them usable is, however, another matter altogether.

So you would want to import it as a Mass, and follow the steps per @Viveka_CD to make the model usable.

For future reference - bringing in DGNs to Revit is an excruciating experience.

Hi,

I have recently switched from microstation to revit, however by doing so I have had to import the file into revit via autocad as a DWG. I have recently imported the 3D building from CAD into Revit, however it has been imported as a solid block, which means that components cant be separated. Is there a way around this, or do I have to draw it from scratch in Revit?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thank you

Hi @Anonymous

I see that you are visiting as a new member! Welcome to the Autodesk community!

Can you try the following and see if it resolves your issue?

Load your dwg into a mass family into your project. This should allow you to use tools such as Pick Wall/Roof By Face in your project.

Make sure the 3D in Autocad is saved as a 3D and not 2D (ie: if its .DWG it will always import as 2D)

Open Revit and start a new Conceptual Mass OR Open a Metric/Imperial Mass Template (.rft).

Insert/Import CAD Format in the Mass template or Conceptual Mass file.

Open a Project (.rvt) if you dont have it open already.

Return to the Mass Template or Conceptual Mass file (to do so you can use CTRL+TAB).

Click on the load into project.

Now convert elements of the 3D into Revit elements by picking face - Example: Architecture > Wall > Wall by Face

Import setting to take care during the import

Colors: Black & White (Unless you have a very specific reason to preserve colors - such as keeping rendered finishes)

Layers/Level: All (purge your AutoCAD first) otherwise its best to select the layers you want to import. Especially if you are importing only to edit selected faces and recreate your 3D in Revit

Please mark this response as "Accept as Solution" if it answers your question. Kudos gladly accepted.
