A line based family in Revit as an egress path

i am having trouble with the scheduling. I am familiar with shared parameters. but I cannot figure out how to make the label that is the generic annotation as a shared parameter and have it show up in the schedule?

Let me share an approach that has worked and I have added to our template -

1) Abandon the family.. You're wasting your time.

2) Create a Railing type.Call it Egress. Use a super tiny profile, maybe make it 6" or so high.

3) Create a railing tag

4) When you need to show egress insert the railing

5) Add the tag

If needed, you can also create a schedule for your Egress paths. Good luck!

The label in the nested generic annotation family needs to be also a shared parameter, pointing to the same shared parameter as the main family. Right now you have that parameter in the label as a family parameter.

In order for the shared parameter to work across files, they all need to reference the same shared parameter in the same shared parameter text file. This means the project model file, the family file, and the nested family file all need to reference the same shared parameter. If they do that, you should be good.

Also, not sure why the 'Egress Distance Label' is a family type parameter. This does nothing for your family.

IMHO, I know it can be neat to use other tools like railings to "cheat the system", but I only advocate that as a means of last resort. As shown in the YouTube tutorial, you can do what you want without resorting to those kinds of tricks.

It's a matter of what works. And if 'tricks' help to get the job done quickly and efficiently (even along stairs and ramps) , then that is what matters.

Using a railing works easily but you need to introduce extra work to filter it out of other views. It is also a 3d element so it is accounted in Interference checking and IFC export.

It is good to know how to link labels from a generic annotation to a geometry family to project. I don't have Revit for a week so I cannot demonstrate any further than what already said by austin above.

Thank you for reminding me of this missed step, @ToanDN. The egress railing will need to be filtered out of all views other than Life Safety plans.

You poor thing - you must be bored out of your skull without Revit!! How did this disaster happen?

Another "trick" to define egress path I'm using is by property lines.
As railings are used very often in our projects, if you use a railing family to show an egress path, it's needed to do a hard work filtering and cheking all of your revit views.

Then, I prefer property lines, because it are much less used than railings.
You can tag every segment of property line and schedule it in order to get the total lenght. The only issue is that only works in a XY plane, it doesn not work to measure the distance over stairs or ramps.

Yes, its only a trick, I know.

try this one

you can add whatever Shared Parameter you need to it.

it is a Generic Model category s othe shared Parameter will need to be associated to this.

create a generic tag and assign the shared parameter to the category Generic Model.

as long as the Shared Parameter is in both the family and the Tag it should work for you
