New laptop, which one?

Hey guys,

Looking to purchase a new laptop to run Revit 2018 on.

Here are my options:

Hi from Spain, JoshMichel97.

Looking at the specifications of the two computers, the first is better than the second without a doubt (second has only HD screen, less RAM and a small SSD disk drive).

First of all, how many money are you planned to spent in this new laptop?, it's not the same spent 600€ than 1800€.

In second place, only for Revit or for another high demanding applications? like Twinmotion, Lumion, ... Be prepared for coming apps in AR or VR.

Well, lets go to the matter:

1 CPU: I would avoid CPUs tagged with de "U" letter. "U" means low voltage, and implies less CPU power. I wolud prefer i7 7700 HQ better than i7 7700U, "HQ" processors have 4 physical cores, but "U" processors are dual core only.

2 Graphics: If you are planning to use AR or VR forget any GPU under Nvidia GTX 1060. Nvidia GTX graphics cards are focused in gaming, but they perform very well in whatever high demanding graphics applications. The way to recognize the power of a Nvidia GPU are the last two numbers; the higher they are, the best they are, for example GTX 1060 is much better than Geforce 940, and worse than a GTX 1070.

3 DiskDrive: The system drive should have at least 256 Gb, 128 Gb is a low value and you can run out of space sooner or later.

4 Network / coomunications. Maybe its possible that you will work connected to a network, loading and saving to a network server. Then the network speed is very very important. I prefer wired ethernet network rather than wifi, anyway its possible to find an adaptor from USB to Ethernet.

5 Operating System: I would advice you Windows 10 Pro rather than Home. Windows 10 Home lacks some features that I consider key features, like offline files. Offline files allows working off line, not connected to the office LAN, in the same way that you would do if you were connected, and when you reconnect again, then the files will be syncronized. For me is the "killer application". If you dont need this feature, then windows 10 home can do a good job.

Thank you for your response! I guess I'll keep an eye for another laptop with more storage installed, seeming it's a vital decision in my context. I have around AUD $1,550 to spend.

4 main aspects I'm looking for:

RAM
Battery
Display
Graphics memory

Any recommendations, my friend?

I recently purchased this a Gigabyte Aero 15,

the key features were big battery, GTX 1060 GPU, Intel i7 7700HQ, low profile and limited weight, but it is over your budget (I've seen that it costs very much in Australia http://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/contents/en-us/p3336_gigabyte-aero-15_Aero15-1060-BK7.html ).

There are similar equipped laptops less priced.

It does not match some of the desireable features:

CPU: intel i7 "U" (dual core not physical quad core) and 6th generation (not the 7th). I7 6560 U is not the best runner you can dream.

Graphics: integrated Iris graphics with shared memory, not dedicated one. This is a BIG problem since Revit is demanding a lot of RAM, and if you have to share 16 gb yours with graphics then the real amount of RAM for Revit could be significantly reduced and performance could be seriously affected, specially in medium or large projects. Avoid whatever laptop with no discrete GPU with their own memory.

Touch screen is not neccesary to work with revit.

The other features are aceptable.

This one matchs almost all desired features except primary SSD storage capacity.

Good CPU (Intel I7 7700 HQ with true 4 physical cores), Good GPU (Nvidia GTX 1059 with 4 Gb of dedicated RAM) and a lot of ports, even RJ45.
