Hi Guys,

I have a project which currently has approx 170 rpc trees in in the scene and when i switch to the revit realistic display view revit grinds to a halt and will not respond for over a minute even if i just try to pan and zoom. Is there any way to solve this ...I have contacted Archvision but they say the problem is on the revit side. In my opinion there isnt much point in adding RPC's if revit can't handle them in realistic view.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

T D'Arcy

170 trees will do it to a model. Do they have to be in the project? Can they be moved to a separate file and then linked in? Possibly linked in to a project that only has the building shell / anything that is visible on the outside?

Hi @t_darcy

Are you rendering locally or through the cloud?

Which version of Revit are you using?

Do you have decals? See HERE for more information

See HERE for slow performance in Revit

As the first step, please check the Desktop App to see if there are any Revit updates available. For information on using the Desktop App see the following article: About the Autodesk Desktop App

Note: If you are not able to download updates through the Desktop App, the following article has information on downloading updates through the Autodesk Accounts page: Install Updates, Add-ons, and Enhancements

Let me know if that helps resolve your issue.

Please select the Accept as Solution button if my post solves your issue or answers your question. Kudos welcome!

Hi,

Im not actually rendering i am only turning to the realistic visual style in the view. Im using revit 2017 latest service pack with all rpc updates etc.

See below my reply from the Archvision people.

Regards

Trevor

Re: (Case 11155) rpc affecting revit viewport speed

Hi Trevor,

I spoke with some developers here, and they attempted to correct a few things, but ultimately the issue is in the way Revit is interacting with us and vice versa. We would love to work with Revit to correct this, but the issue has to be initiated by a customer, so we would like for you to open a ticket with Revit and express this. Then we should be able to make traction in working with them for a solution.

I'm sorry there is not an easy fix for this, and until we know what's happening with Revit, we cannot troubleshoot our own possible issues. Please let me know if you do get a case open with Revit and we will contact them with that number.

Thank you for your patience!

Edited by Autodesk. Removed Archvision agent's contact information.

Hi @t_darcy

Thanks for clarifying!

Glad to hear that all your updates are in place.

I'll be happy to connect with the RPC support, but we need more information from you:

Going back to your original post, since you mentioned Revit hangs for a long time, a couple of questions to better understand your issue:

Does Revit eventually crash, and does that generate a CER?

What are your graphics display options settings?

Do you have one or more linked file in your main model?

Can you check the RAM on your machine during this process?

Can you try the following for me?

Please group your RPC elements in a separate Revit model (purge and audit) and try linking that in your main model

Have your entourage/ RPC content on a separate workset

Check if graphics card is certified with Revit 2017

Check if graphics card driver is updated from manufacturer's website

Check system requirements and use this tool to find recommended system hardware or graphics hardware and drivers

Check if you have hardware acceleration turned on (Options > Graphics > Graphics Mode > Use Hardware Acceleration)

There could also be the possibility of a model corruption.

However, please send us your journal to troubleshoot further. It will help if you can share a model to test. I can send you a private folder to upload.

Looking forward to your reply update.

Thanks,

@t_darcy it doesn't matter where the trees came from - Archvision, 3DS Max, Revit, and which program they are inserted in! I had a 3DS Max model die because of hundreds of 3DS Max trees that had been inserted in the model - and 3DS Max was built to render such amounts of geometry.

Moral of the story - trees are resource hungry pieces of content that will bloat up and slow down the model.

Update - I don't believe this is solved yet (Revit 2019). I just added about 15 trees of the same tree from Archvision, and it slowed realistic view mode quite a bit. Deleted trees one by one, and it got a bit faster every time. No trees - speed back to 100% in realistic mode. This does not happen with cars or "solid" RPC. Not sure, but perhaps the slow down is related directly to the complexity of the Alpha Map (the cutouts in the image). Perhaps having all landscaping on a workset would speed things up??

Also - printing with the trees on in realistic mode was taking forever (basically wouldn't print to pdf), which is what brought me here in the first place.
