Nested Detail in structural Beam Viability Bug

Hello,

I am trying to add a solid filled pattern(red in colour) to structural beams in section by nesting a detail family but for some reason only some of the beams are displaying the detail family in the sections while others are not. I tried placing the hatch pattern at different planes in the beam but it did not help.

Please find attached the revit file(2018) and screen shot of the problem.

On searching through the internet I came across post which seem to describe the same problem but it was not helpful.

Detail items only show when they are parallel to the view plane. So if you cut the beam at an angle, or the beam is sloped, then the filled region will not show.

You need to change the cut pattern of the beam material instead of using a filled region.

I am trying to introduce a hatch pattern as a detail component in order to mask the lines of the wall that overlap with the beam. The beams are in a linked file therefore it is not possible to use join geometry also decreasing the wall height would lead to lines appearing in elevation also,which is undesirable. The section cut the beam at right angles. I tried placing the detail component in several planes in the family but with no luck.

Hello

You can have a 3d extrusion in beam family ( similar profile you want, red hatch ),

and in beam family, " visibility " " show when its cut "

give that 3d extrusion " a material "

create a new material property as to show red hatch " in cut pattern "

Thanks for the reply, my main intention behind introducing the detail component was so that the detail component will be drawn in front there masking the wall like behind it.

What I am looking for mainly is a solution to the overlap problem between walls and beams from the linked file.

I still don't get why you need to go through all this. If you beams are in front of a wall then they will mask the wall.

I apologies if I have not been able to clearly explain my problem.

I am talking about concrete frame structures in which the wall core that is the brick work should go up to the beam while the will part will run uninterrupted. I order to achieve this we normally use join geometry to cut the beams out of the wall but in this case the entire structure is done as a linked file therefore join geometry does not form so I was trying to introduce a detail component to mask the wall lines. Please see the attached pictures

My main issue is with the unpredictable behavior of the nested detail component.If I could some how get the nested detail component to show up in all the views it will solve my problem as it would then mask the walls lines

What you show below cannot be fixed by add a detail or a mask to the beam. You just need to join the wall and the beam, and make sure the join order is correct so that the beam will cut the wall.

But it is not possible to do join geometry with linked file. Also it would
decrease model performence as a reasult of all those join operations.

Do you own the structural model or the architectural model?

I can also have control over the structural model but it has to be a linked
file since it is made by a separate consultant.

I would suggest you split walls per level, edit wall type and unlock wall core layer, then you can stretch the core to match the bottom of the beam. Join walls from one level to another and the finish layer will join nicely.

Hello, thanks for your suggestion.We tried implementing your solution but it requires a lot of effort to manually update all the wall after each iteration causing a change to beam depth etc.

Also are not walls supposed to be drawn from lowest level to highest level as per Autodesk best practices.

You want good results you have to put in efforts. Do it once and lock the top of wall core to the bottom of the beam.

Thanks. Just a thought, such type of concrete and brick masanory is very
common in India almost all our building are made in this manner. I feel
that Autodesk should really come out with a solution for this.
Also any idea what was causing the detail component to show up
in some views but not in others.
