Rotating 3D

Hi there,

I have designed a façade panel mock up that has an angle of 6degrees. I have drawn the mock up in a flat 90degree plane, but I cannot seem to rotate this to achieve the design spec angle of 6degrees. can someone assist please.

I am presented with an error box saying some element will be deleted, why is this?

You've got to give us more information.

Are we talking about a family you're trying to create? What family category is it? What template did you start with? Or are you making it with the model-in-place tools? Or are you developing it with some other method, like wall sweeps perhaps?

What workplane are you modeling on? Have you used extrusions? Sweeps? Something else?

Maybe provide a picture or two so we can understand what is going on?

My thoughts exactly, @chrisplyler.

Thinking aloud - I would create the panel as a family, set up the required angle of inclination in the family itself, and then plonk it into the model.

All,

I am creating a unitised façade mock up. so I have detailed a number of families within Metric Generic Model option. I am having trouble rotating in the Architectural template space where I am bringing all the families together to form the unitised frame.

2. Metric Generic Model

3. Simply inserting the family profiles and aligning them with the grid lines I have set

4. I have used both extrusions and sweeps during the family creation

Don't bring the families together in the model - bring them together in another family. Once this family is right, THEN bring it all into the model.

I would usually do this in the family model as you mentioned, however I assumed it would be easier here. I don't need this model to be constrained in anyway, purely for a visual aspect only. this still does not explain why I am unable to rotate the families together?

The reason it won't rotate in the Project environment is this:

As a generic model, you have used extrusions and sweeps and stuff that is all modeled/hosted on the Level or other Ref.Plane, and either way is related/hosted to a LEVEL. So when you plonk it into the Project on Level-1 or whatever, that's what you get.

Think about it...can you place a furniture family in a floor plan and then tip it up on its side? No, you can't. It's base is always and only parallel to the Level that it's hosted on.

You'll either need to build everything at the angle you want inside the family before you bring it into the Project, or build everything based on a reference line that's got an angle parameter to the Level so that you can tip it all up based on a parameter, or use a more complicated solution like an adaptive family.

OR...

Use a face based or wall based family so that you can place/host the facade onto the outside of an actual wall element (or a ref.plane, or a grid line, etc.) and then you can rotate it in an Elevation view.

can I use existing families and create the unitised frame in the Faced based model and rotate like this?

Made this screencast for you...

You should be able to open the face-based family template, set the Front plane to be the current work plane, load in your regular generic you've already made, and place it such that it orients correctly onto the pre-existing "face placeholder" that exists in the face-based template.

Why don't simply change the Level based family to workplane based and uncheck Always vertical?

If I place them on a reference plane and rotate the reference plane then they will rotate to follow.

But if I need families that can rotate freely like signs mounted on a wall by sloppy contractor then I would also use face based.

that was great thanks! I'm sure it will be very useful in future projects. However in the project, I am rotating the unitised frame in elevation, so giving the family a 6degree lean outwards. (see attached)

can this be done?
