I have a simple family that has 2 sides with a cross member at the top. The top is at 7’-0” high, and the family is set up as a floor based Generic family, which I thought was supposed to be cuttable. I tried changing to other family types, but when I load it into a project with a cut plane of 5’-6”, the top part appears and isn’t being cut in section. I suspect there’s a setting for this but can’t find it. Is there a way to do this?

In the family under Visibility settings at the top. I'll bet it got unchecked when you started experimenting with different family categories.

...if, by chance, it's grayed out; switch the family category to one that will give you have access to that checkbox, and then switch it back after checking.

Hate to tell you, but the family doesn't appear to be the problem. All's good here. Perhaps a view setting in your project is the culprit? Could you explain again what is happening for you? You mention Plan View and Section View cut display. Are you saying that it shows no cross-member when seen in a Section Cut Elevation View?

...and then you mention Plan View representation. Are you saying that the cross-member shows or does not show when you're cut range is below the member?

The issue isn't the sloped floor, but the gate is below the cut plane. If you placed it on a flat surface that is low enough you would face the same issue.

Just to be clear guys, if you are cutting through an object that is placed at a angle to the view, it's going to look different (obviously). I thought that was what @PhilvK discovered, and what I meant by the "old sloped floor phenom". I was making light of what I thought was a simple misinterpretation of what was going on. I think we've all been victims of the "old sloped floor phenom".
