I am using several Velux GDL Cabrio Balcony roof windows in a project, with the model downloaded from their website (https://www.velux.co.uk/professional/products/cad-bim/revit), which I have attached.

In plan the windows aren't cut, so they appear to extend beyond the roof.

From some light research I think the problem is a combination of nested window families and the cut plane. But when I tried to change the cut plane in the parent family, I realized the window is set up on a flat roof (instead of a vertical roof, more like a wall), and therefore the cut plane is parallel to the window itself. I can't seem to easily rotate the family or change the slope of the roof in the family.

Any ideas on how to adjust this, or is my problem something else entirely?

Your windows are Roof-hosted instead of Wall hosted, like normal tame window families are.

Plan - convert Roof Hosted window to Wall Hosted - CTRL-C CTRL-V all the geometry from this family into a Generic Model template, make sure that the geometry and basic parameters are right, then insert into a Wall Hosted window family template, complete the parameters. One advantage to this approach is that you end up with much fewer redundant parameters that manufacturers insist on adding to their families.

If the windows are really meant to be parallel to the cut plane, then maybe Plan Regions? Maybe the RCP would be representative enough? Maybe an overlay to show the location of the windows? Ah, decisions, decisions.....

Of course you could post a screenshot, possibly a model file, so that you do not have to endure any more uninformed guesses.....

Thanks Rina, but it seems you misunderstand the problem. The windows are roof hosted because I need them in a roof (hence roof windows). They are placed on a roof with a 45 degree slope.

I do not want them to be parallel to the cut plane, that is just how the original family is set up. In fact, I think I need them perpendicular to the cut plane, so that they are actually cut when viewed in plan.

Hopefully from the attached model file now you can see that the windows should be cut along with the roof.

One word answer for you - workaround!

Take a look at this - this is as far as I was able to make the top plan look reasonable.

1) I applied a View template - Plan View

2) Added a filter to display the windows in hidden lines

3) In the upper level plan - I used Modify>>Linework and filled regions (I'm sorry!!) to make the window look respectable....

I think that the fact that the cutting plane is at an angle to the windows is creating the problem.....

Perhaps a Reflected Ceiling Plan View would work, with an Underlay looking down to show floor plan context.

Maybe use a Plan Region so you can adjust cut plane where you need it to display properly.

One was a workaround, which would require a lot of unnecessary effort given the number of windows in my project. The other may be plausible, but I was not able to get it to work. I don't want to accept either suggestion as a solution, given that neither really solved the issue.

I suspect that not many people are having such a problem, and it could be fairly unique to the family I am using. If I find an answer, I will be certain to post it here.
